🧬 What do BRCA1 and BRCA2 actually do?

Dr. Aparna Ganapathy explains how these important DNA repair genes work and what inherited variants can mean for cancer risk.

When someone inherits a harmful variant in BRCA1 or BRCA2, this repair process may not work as effectively. Over time, this can allow DNA errors to accumulate and increase the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast and ovarian cancer.

But an important distinction: having a BRCA variant does not mean you will definitely develop cancer. It means your inherited risk may be higher.

Understanding your genes can help you better understand your risk and make more informed decisions about your health.

🩷 What actually determines your breast cancer risk?

Breast cancer risk isn’t determined by one factor alone. It can be influenced by a combination of age, family history, genetics, hormones, reproductive factors, lifestyle and environmental factors.

🧬 Inherited genetic variants such as harmful BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants can significantly increase risk — making genetic information an important part of understanding your personal risk.

But remember: having a risk factor doesn’t mean you will develop breast cancer, and having no obvious risk factors doesn’t mean your risk is zero.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take the opportunity to understand your personal risk and have informed conversations with your healthcare provider.

Know your risk. Know your options. 🩷

☕ Why can some people drink coffee at 7 PM and sleep like a baby… while others are awake until 4 AM?

It might not just be the coffee. Your genes can play a role too. 🧬

Certain variants in CYP1A2 can influence how quickly your body breaks down caffeine, while ADORA2A variants can influence how sensitive you are to its effects.

So that evening coffee might be nothing for one person… and a night of staring at the ceiling for another. 👀

Your caffeine tolerance could be more personal than you think.

🍸 Same drinks, different mornings? Your DNA may play a role. 🧬

The way your body processes alcohol isn’t exactly the same as everyone else’s. Genetic variations, including those in the ALDH2 gene, can affect how efficiently acetaldehyde is broken down.

So, that brutal next-day feeling may have more to do with your biology than you think.

🍷 Why does alcohol hit some people harder than others?

It may have something to do with your DNA. 🧬

Genetic variations in ALDH2, an enzyme involved in alcohol metabolism, can affect how efficiently your body breaks down acetaldehyde — potentially influencing symptoms like nausea, flushing and hangovers.

Your genes can shape how your body responds to alcohol, but they’re only one piece of the puzzle.

🦖 Could we really bring dinosaurs back using DNA?

In Jurassic Park, scientists extract dinosaur DNA from mosquitoes preserved in amber and use it to recreate dinosaurs.

But what does science actually say?

🧬 THE REAL SCIENCE:
DNA breaks down over time, making it extremely unlikely that usable dinosaur DNA could survive for around 66 million years.

Even if we recovered fragments of ancient DNA, we wouldn't have a complete dinosaur genome to recreate the animal.

🔬 SCIENCE ACCURACY SCORE: 4.5/10

Based on:
• Scientific basis
• Biological accuracy
• Genetics accuracy
• Plausibility
• Scientific evidence

The idea is rooted in real genetics — but bringing a T. rex back? That's still Hollywood.
