How much do we know about cortisol?

What is it?

Cortisol is stress hormone, released by adrenal glands. Once we get stressed by whatever including pain, they produce this hormone to boost your immune system by limiting inflammation or suppress over tired immune system.

Think of a cortisone injection. We take it to prevent further inflammatory reaction.

We understand that cortisol is essential for your body to function well.

However, overproduction of cortisol is another story why?

Cuz it causes side effects such as metabolic disorders, mood swings, sleep disorders, diabetes.

All these side effects can be related. Imagine that you have insomnia then get stressed. This can make u feel angry and frustrated.

For me, once stressed, I find something that makes me feel better at least. Thats binge eating.

So you start eaiting then gaining weight. That even stresses you even more. Yes more cortisol production.

Plus, increased level of cortisol can prevent protein synthesis. What does it mean?

Yes you get high glucose accumulation in the bloodstream. What glucose does is that certain amount of it is used for body energy. What about the rest? It turns into fat.

Research: big corelation between excessive adipose tissue and diabetes.

What can be a good solution?
In other words, how can we prevent all these side effects?

The answer is keep cortisol at safe level.
We certainly need it for our life but if too much, not a good thing as u know.

Research: exercising helps reduce cortisol level.

How? And how much exercise?

This is a tricky question but whats been thought is that exercising itself can be stress to the body so can cause more cortisol production.

I know it is not a good news.
But once you do low intensity of exercise like yoga, aerobic or walking exrcises. They can help to lower the cortisol production. On top of that, exercising stimulates pituitary gland that connects to adrenal glands to release endorphins.

What about endorphins?

Yes they are pain killers and happy hormones, elevating quality of your life.

Once you destress yourself like this, you know what comes next. Less stimulation to the adrenal glands so less corticol release.

Avoid intense exercise but keep it low.
Exercising can be stress to you body so watch out for someone with hypersensitive nervous system like peripheral or/and central sensitisation.

When feeling better, slowly and gradually increase the intensity of your workout.

Keep eating healthy.

Sleep well.

💢 , this is the exact why you need to 💢

👩‍👧‍👦Kegel exercises are also known as pelvic floor muscle exercises.👩‍👧‍👦
These exercises are known to strengthen the pelvic floor which helps in preventing and controlling bladder leakage. While these exercises can be done by both men and women, they can be especially beneficial for women after pregnancy and childbirth. Before you start doing kegel exercises, it is important to understand why you need to inculcate kegel exercises in your daily routine.

✳️Why women need to do kegel exercises✳️

As you get older, your body goes through a sea of changes. Even though it may never cross our mind, but your pelvic muscles start to weaken as you age. Pelvic floor muscles are the ones that support the muscles under your uterus, bladder, and bowels. When you start doing kegel exercises, it can also prevent urine leakage and loss of bowel control.
These exercises are especially important for women, as pelvic muscles may weaken after childbirth, pregnancy, ageing and weight gain.

❇️How to identify pelvic muscles❇️

It is important to locate the exact set of muscles to avail the maximum benefits of pelvic floor muscle exercise. One of the simplest ways to identify them is to try to stop your urine flow while p*eing. The muscles you feel lifting and helping you p*e are the pelvic muscles.
Another method is to wash your hands and insert a clean finger inside your va**na. Now tighten the muscles around the finger and move up and down. Once you have identified these muscles, you can start doing kegel exercises.

💥How to do kegal exercise💥

Start by squeezing your pelvic muscles slowly for 3 seconds and then relax them for a count of three. Try doing it 10 times in a row. You can repeat the set 2 to 3 times a day. Do not hold your breath during the exercise and breathe freely.

While squeezing your pelvic muscles, make sure that you are not squeezing your abdomen, buttock, back or thigh muscles.
It is best to empty your bladder before you start doing kegel.

🔥The bottom line🔥

Remember that while you can do kegel exercises any time you want, avoid doing them while you p*e. This is because it may lead to incomplete emptying of the bladder and cause UTI (Urinary Tract Infection. Also, ensure that you do not overdo the exercise as muscles may become too stiff.

💢Are carbs really bad for you or not??💢

💥What are carbohydrates (carbs)?💥

Carbohydrates are one of the highly essential macronutrients required for our body-the other two are protein and fats. There are three types of carbohydrates found in food-sugar, starch, and fiber.

🔥Why do we need Carbohydrates?🔥

They are the most important source of energy for the body; the digestive system converts carbs into blood sugar or glucose.

The body uses this glucose as energy, for fuelling our activities, whether going for a jog or just breathing. Unused glucose is converted into glycogen, which is found in the liver and muscles.

The fiber found in fruits and vegetables is an essential part of a healthy diet as it promotes good bowel health, reduces the risk of constipation, and also reduces cholesterol levels.

Studies also proved fiber-rich diet lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and bowel cancer.

💫Are Carbohydrates really bad?💫

The idea that “carbs are bad” has left many of us confused about carbohydrates and their importance for our health, including maintaining a healthy weight. Researchers say people should know that not all carbs are the same. It’s the type, quality, and quantity of the diet that is important.

Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy, and hence, in their absence, the body will use protein and fat for energy. It may also become difficult to get enough fiber, as it is important for long-term health.

Significantly reducing carbohydrates from the diet in the long term may put you at risk of nutrient deficiency and related health issues. Also, replacing carbs with fats and protein-rich foods increases the intake of saturated fat, which raises the cholesterol in your blood, which may lead to a heart attack.

When you are low in glucose, the body breaks down fat to convert into energy, and this process may cause a build-up of ketones in the body, a process called ketosis-this condition cause headaches, weakness, nausea, dehydration, dizziness, and irritability.

❇️What are good carbs and bad carbs?❇️

These terms are made popular by diet promoters. Basically, good carbs mean foods that contain high fiber amounts; they take a longer time to break and be used for energy. Examples include whole-grain bread and cereals, products made from whole wheat flour, vegetables, and fruits.

Bad carbs refer to foods that contain refined carbohydrates with a low fiber amount. Examples include- white bread, cakes, cookies, and other bakery items made with white flour, white (processed) rice, and some cereals.

✳️How much carbohydrates should I take?✳️

Researchers recommend that just over a third of your diet should include starchy foods such as potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, and over third should be fruits and vegetables.

🔄What carbohydrates should I eat?🔄

Data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey recommends that we should eat more fiber and starchy foods and fewer confectionery like sweets, chocolates, biscuits, pastries, cakes, and soft drinks. These are usually high in sugar and calories that may increase the risk of tooth decay and increase the bodyweight if you eat them too often while providing few other nutrients.

Fruit, vegetables, pulses, and starchy foods provide a wider range of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, which are beneficial to health.

🧠How to increase fiber intake?🧠

To increase the fiber intake in your diet, aim for at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg a day.

Try to aim for an average intake of 30g of fiber a day. Here are some examples of the typical fiber content in some common foods:

2 breakfast wheat biscuits (approx. 37.5g) – 3.6g of fiber

1 slice of wholemeal bread – 2.5g (1 slice of white bread – 0.9g)

80g of cooked wholewheat pasta – 4.2g

1 medium (180g) baked potato (with skin) – 4.7g

80g of cooked beans – 1.6g

80g of cooked carrots – 2.2g

1 small cob (3 heaped tablespoons) of sweetcorn – 2.2g

200g of baked beans – 9.8g

1 medium orange – 1.9g

1 medium banana – 1.4g

Now comes the main question- Do carbohydrates make us fat?

Any food can cause weight gain if we overeat. Whether our diet is rich in fat or carbohydrates, if we frequently consume more energy than the body uses or requires, we are most likely to end up putting on weight.

👩‍👧‍👦In fact, carbohydrate contains fewer than half the calories of fat. Foods high in fiber add bulk to the meal and help feel full. But foods high in sugar are often high in calories, and eating these foods too often can contribute to becoming overweight.👩‍👧‍👦

So, ’t for and make your own assumptions regarding their importance in overall health. Take sufficient carbs in the diet and stay healthy!
