Imagine a narrow road with hairpin turns hugging
the edge of a mountain. Every year, dozens of cars fall off the mountain, crashing into the valley below.
1. One approach to the problem would be to post warning signs ahead of the dangerous turns and erect guardrails to prevent cars from going
off the road.
2. The second approach to the problem might
be to build larger emergency and operating rooms at the local hospital to better accommodate the dead and injured passengers.
In the old myth, symptoms of
disease are inconvenient messages of the body that need to be eliminated in order to continue on the same road we have always been on. The injured passengers and smashed cars at the bottom of the valley are seen as the problem that needs to be “fixed.”
In the new story, symptoms are seen as warning
signs, telling us that if we continue down the same
road, there is danger ahead. Disease symptoms are not mistakes; they come from the innate wisdom of the body-mind. Symptoms are the means by which the wisdom of our body attempts to modify our behavior, increase our ability to experience energy, move freely, and relieve tension.
The body-mind wants to tell us its story, express its needs, and let us know what it’s feeling. By becoming aware of, and responding to, these inner messages, there is the promise that our symptoms and condition may easily be resolved.
