Why allergies are common in spring season (Basant ritu )?
Basant Ritu (spring season) is described in Ayurveda as the period when accumulated Kapha dosha from winter begins to liquefy due to the increasing warmth of the sun. According to Charaka Samhita, this aggravated Kapha can weaken digestion (Agni) and lead to diseases like cough, cold, and allergies if not properly managed. Ashtanga Hridaya also explains that during this season, the body becomes more prone to heaviness and lethargy, and hence recommends light, easily digestible foods, physical exercise, and purification therapies like Vamana.
Ayurveda emphasize adopting a Kapha-pacifying regimen—such as consuming bitter and pungent foods, engaging in regular activity, and avoiding excessive sleep—to maintain balance and health during Basant Ritu.
