WHO ARE AT RISK OF SPINE FRACTURES?
What is Spine fracture?
Spine fractures happen when one or more bones in the spine break. This can be caused by things like accidents, falls, or osteoporosis (weak bones). When a fracture occurs, it can cause pain, trouble moving, and sometimes even paralysis if the spinal cord gets injured.
Spine fractures can vary in severity, ranging from minor compression fractures to more serious fractures that cause instability or damage to the spinal cord.
Who are at the risk of spine fractures?
Here are some of the people who are at higher risk for spine fractures:
• OLDER ADULTS: As we age, our bones naturally lose density and become weaker, making them more susceptible to fractures. This is especially true for people over 50.
• WOMEN: Women are more prone to osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, due to hormonal changes like menopause.
• PEOPLE WITH OSTEOPOROSIS: Osteoporosis is a major risk factor for spinal fractures. It thins and weakens bones, making them more likely to break from even a minor fall or bump.
• PEOPLE WITH CERTAIN MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Cushing's syndrome, can weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures.
• PEOPLE TAKING CERTAIN MEDICATIONS: Long-term use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids and some anti-seizure medications, can weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures.
• PEOPLE WITH A HISTORY OF FRACTURES: If you have had a fracture in the past, you are more likely to have another fracture in the future, including a spinal fracture.
• PEOPLE WITH A FAMILY HISTORY OF OSTEOPOROSIS: If you have a close relative (parent, sibling, child) with osteoporosis, you are at an increased risk of developing the condition yourself.
• PEOPLE WITH CERTAIN LIFESTYLE HABITS: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and a diet low in calcium and vitamin D can all contribute to weak bones and an increased risk of fractures.
It's essential for individuals, especially those at higher risk, to take preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, getting regular exercise, and managing medical conditions effectively to reduce the likelihood of spine fractures.
