Snakebite remains one of India's most neglected public health challenges, but awareness has the power to save lives.
As part of National Snakebite Awareness Day 2026, the Zero Snakebite Death Initiative – Snakebite Awareness Response Prevention and Action - ICMR-Centre for Advanced Research Project is excited to invite undergraduate and postgraduate students across Kerala to participate in an Educational Reels Competition and become champions of evidence-based snakebite awareness.

World Snake Day 2026 | District-Level Quiz Competition -Kannur

As part of the World Snake Day 2026 observance, the District-Level World Snake Day Quiz Competition was successfully organized on 16 July 2026 at the Kannur District Police Cooperative Society, Kannur, under the Zero Snakebite Death Initiative (SARPA) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in coordination with the Department of Health Services, Kerala, District Medical Office, Kannur, and Amrita Hospital, Kochi. 

The competition brought together 20 students (10 finalist teams) who had qualified through the preliminary round. Participants showcased their knowledge through five engaging rounds: MCQ, One-Word, Visual Identification I, Visual Identification II, and the Buzzer Round. 

The programme was inaugurated with a welcome address by Dr. Sachin K C, Deputy District Medical Officer, Kannur, emphasizing the importance of snakebite awareness and scientific understanding of snakes. The quiz was conducted by Ms. Revathy R J and Dr. Aravind M S. 

The Prize Distribution Ceremony was graced by Dr. Vivek Kumar, District Medical Officer, Kannur, and Mr. K. Saji, IFS, District Forest Officer, Kannur, who felicitated the winners and encouraged students to become ambassadors of snakebite awareness in their communities. 

The celebration concluded with the winning teams being felicitated by Shri Vishnuraj P, IAS, District Collector, Kannur, marking a memorable end to the World Snake Day celebrations. 

Together, let us continue spreading awareness and work towards a Zero Snakebite Death.

📢 Proud Moment for the Snakebite Awareness Response Prevention and Action - ICMR-Centre for Advanced Research Team

We are delighted to share the publication of our correspondence article,"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳: 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘒𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘢 𝘓𝘢𝘺 𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘢𝘱 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 ‘𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘚𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦’ 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢?" in the journal Tropical Medicine and Health.

This publication represents a significant milestone in India's journey towards eliminating preventable snakebite deaths and highlights the remarkable progress achieved through the Kerala Model of snakebite prevention, management, community engagement, and health system strengthening.

The paper outlines a comprehensive roadmap built upon 's successful experiences, including community awareness initiatives, strengthened healthcare systems, digital innovations such as the App, certified snake rescue networks, improved accessibility, and multi-sectoral collaboration. Importantly, it emphasizes that achieving "Zero Snakebite Deaths" in India is not merely an aspiration but an achievable public health goal through coordinated action and evidence-based interventions.

The ideas and perspectives presented in this paper evolved through a series of discussions among stakeholders working across public health, health systems, governance, and environmental sectors. Importantly, this publication served as a conceptual and Scientific foundation for the Snakebite Awareness Response Prevention and Action - ICMR-Centre for Advanced Research Project, helping shape the vision, priorities, and implementation framework of the Zero Snakebite Death Initiative.

We would like to particularly acknowledge the contributions of Rajan N. Khobragade, Dr AJAN M J, Harikumar Sivanandan, and Mohammed Anvar. Their insights, field experience, and policy perspectives were instrumental in shaping the conceptual framework of this publication and the broader vision for a Zero Snakebite Deaths Initiative in Kerala and India.

As we move forward, we remain committed to strengthening community empowerment, enhancing healthcare preparedness, improving surveillance systems, and fostering partnerships that will help transform the vision of Zero Snakebite Deaths into reality.

The Snakebite Awareness Response Prevention and Action - ICMR-Centre for Advanced Research – team successfully conducted its monthly project review meeting to assess progress, discuss achievements, address challenges, and plan upcoming activities under the project "Zero Snakebite Death Initiative: Community Empowerment and Engagement for Mitigation of Snakebite Envenoming."
The meeting provided an opportunity for team members to present updates on field activities, research outputs, community engagement initiatives, training programs, and stakeholder collaborations. Constructive discussions helped identify key priorities and strategies to strengthen project implementation in the coming months.
Regular review meetings play a vital role in ensuring effective coordination, monitoring project milestones, and maintaining momentum toward our shared goal of reducing snakebite morbidity and mortality through evidence-based interventions and community participation.
We appreciate the dedication and collective efforts of all team members and partners who continue to contribute to the success of this initiative.
