𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙍𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨, 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨: 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨!
Tufail Reza Choudhury is a name long associated with intimidation and threat culture within medical campuses in West Bengal. An undergraduate from Malda Medical College, he built a reputation as one of the central figures behind the culture of coercion and political muscle on campus. Stories of his activities still circulate widely in the corridors there. He is also the son of a notorious ruling party leader from Malda, though it is his own notoriety within the campus ecosystem that made him widely known.
At the time of the Abhaya incident, he was a Diploma Postgraduate Trainee in Orthopedics at Kolkata Medical College.
What followed after 9 August 2024 was striking. For nearly three months he was effectively missing from duty, absent from campus, hospital and hostel alike. Though, to be fair, even before that he was rarely seen on regular duty, protected as he was by strong political patronage.
The last confirmed sighting of him was on 9 August at RG Kar Medical College.
That day, when Abhaya’s body was being surrounded by the Sandip Ghosh network and its loyalists, several individuals from different medical colleges across the state appeared there with remarkable speed. Even before the junior doctors of RG Kar could gather after hearing the news, this group had already arrived. Among them were figures like Abhik, Birupaksha and Tufail Reza Choudhury.
Later, Swasthya Bhavan offered a curious explanation. According to their dubious claim, many of these individuals were already at R.G.kar for an "Independence Day parade rehearsal" and rushed to the spot receiving the news. Tufail, we are told, was one of the organisers of that programme.
Why revisit this today?
Because the recently imposed Senior Resident SOP, widely criticised as illegal and undemocratic, is now revealing its real purpose.
The posting list of diploma-qualified Senior Residents shows 49 specialists from departments like Gynecology, Orthopedics, Anesthesia and Ophthalmology being sent to district hospitals, super-speciality facilities and even rural hospitals, often without the infrastructure or departments necessary for their training. Not a single one among them has been posted to a medical college or teaching institute.
Except one. Tufail Reza Choudhury, who alone received a Senior Resident posting at Malda Medical College.
What exceptional merit separates him from the other 48 specialists hardly requires explanation. The intention behind this SOP crafted at Swasthya Bhavan now stands exposed.
Preparations are already underway to challenge this unethical SOP and these arbitrary postings legally. But if citizens, doctors and all people of conscience do not raise their voices together in anger and protest, the consequence will be clear.
This ecosystem of intimidation and threat culture will only strengthen further. And in its shadow, many more Abhayas will remain vulnerable.
