Thyroid Nodules: Most Are Harmless. Some Need a Closer Look.
Not every lump in the thyroid means cancer.
Thyroid nodules are common, and most are benign. But some nodules may need further evaluation to understand what they are and whether treatment is required.
So, what could a thyroid nodule be?
It may be a colloid nodule, thyroid cyst, thyroid adenoma, multinodular goiter or, in a smaller number of cases, thyroid cancer.
The important part is knowing when a nodule needs to be checked.
A visible lump or swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness, or certain symptoms of an overactive thyroid can be reasons to seek medical evaluation.
Depending on the situation, evaluation may include blood tests, ultrasound and, when needed, an FNA biopsy.
