Is Your Dog Too Old for Cancer Treatment? Not Necessarily. 🐾

Age alone doesn’t decide whether a dog can undergo cancer treatment. Many senior dogs can tolerate chemotherapy, surgery, and even radiation well—their overall health matters more than the number of candles on their birthday.

And remember, “senior” means different things for different breeds. Larger dogs generally reach their senior years earlier than smaller breeds.

Once your dog enters their senior years, a wellness check every 6 months is recommended. Dogs with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis may need more frequent monitoring.

Early and regular check-ups can help identify health changes sooner and guide the right care for your pet. ❤️

Found a lump on your pet? The first step is not always surgery.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, or FNAC, is a quick and minimally invasive test that helps us understand whether a lump may be inflammatory, benign or malignant. In most cases, it takes only a few minutes, does not require anaesthesia and can provide preliminary answers within hours.

A biopsy may still be recommended when we need a more definitive diagnosis, tumour grading or additional information to plan treatment.

Early testing helps us make informed decisions without putting your pet through unnecessary procedures.

When Django was diagnosed with a tumour in his lung, his age made the decision difficult—but living with pain and discomfort was not the life his family wanted for him.

After carefully assessing his overall health, our specialist team performed a thoracotomy and removed the affected lung lobe. Histopathology later confirmed the tumour to be an adenocarcinoma.

Django’s journey is an important reminder: age alone should not determine whether a pet can receive treatment. Every decision must be based on the patient’s health, diagnosis and expected quality of life.

Because sometimes, age really is just a number. 💙

Dr. Noopur Desai recently conducted a hands-on training programme on Clinical Tumour Sampling and Diagnostic Approach in Veterinary Oncology at Bihar Veterinary College, BASU, Patna.

The session focused on practical oncology diagnostics, including tumour examination, FNAC, biopsy techniques, cytological smear preparation, and clinical decision-making, equipping the next generation of veterinarians with skills that translate directly into better patient care.

At The Cancer Vet, we believe advancing veterinary oncology goes beyond treating patients. It’s also about sharing knowledge, mentoring clinicians, and strengthening the future of cancer care.

Austin, a 12-year-old Labrador, was brought in for difficulty passing stool. A routine examination revealed a small perianal mass, and further CT imaging showed that multiple pelvic lymph nodes were already enlarged due to metastasis.

Austin underwent surgery to remove the mass along with the affected lymph nodes. Histopathology confirmed metastatic spread, but despite the complexity of the surgery, he recovered beautifully without complications. 🐾

Four months later, Austin continues to do very well and enjoy a good quality of life. 💙

Picasso, a 5-year-old Golden Retriever, came to us with a large kidney mass. After staging with a CT scan and further diagnostics, we confirmed that the disease had not spread elsewhere in the body. 🐾

A nephrectomy was performed to surgically remove the affected kidney after ensuring the other kidney was functioning well. Histopathology later confirmed the mass to be a sarcoma.

Post-surgery, Picasso is recovering beautifully — eating well, playing, and back to enjoying life like a puppy again. 💙🐶
