On Saturday, July 27, 2024, the "Aarogy Jagar" initiative continued its mission to promote health awareness and education with a focused session on cancer, one of the most challenging and impactful health issues of our time. Organised by Kulkarni Clinics and Balvikas Sangh, Chembur, this event was held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, drawing a dedicated group of around 50 participants. As with all "Aarogy Jagar" events, this session was open to the public and free of charge, underscoring the organisers' commitment to making vital health information accessible to everyone.
The "Aarogy Jagar" series is a monthly event designed to provide the community with direct access to expert knowledge on various medical topics. Each session features lectures by leading healthcare professionals, followed by interactive discussions that allow participants to engage directly with the experts. This session, held on the last Saturday of June, was dedicated to discussing three significant types of cancer: Breast Cancer, Uterine Cancer, and Lung Cancer.
The event began with a comprehensive presentation on breast cancer by Dr. Garvit Chitkara, a respected oncologist. Dr. Chitkara provided a detailed overview of breast cancer, including its causes, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. He emphasised the role of regular self-examinations and mammograms in catching breast cancer in its early stages, where it is most treatable. Dr. Chitkara also discussed the latest advancements in breast cancer treatment, including surgery, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies, offering hope and information to those who might be at risk or affected by this condition.
Following Dr. Chitkara’s session, Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni, a Gynaecologist with extensive experience in women's health, addressed the audience on uterine cancer. Dr. Kulkarni explained the different types of uterine cancer, focusing on endometrial cancer, the most common form. She discussed the symptoms to watch for, such as abnormal bleeding, and the importance of early diagnosis. Dr. Kulkarni also highlighted the treatment options available, including surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation, and emphasised the importance of regular gynaecological check-ups, especially for women in high-risk groups.
The final presentation was delivered by Dr. George Karimundakl, an expert in Thorasic Surgeon, who focused on lung cancer. Dr. Karimundakl provided an in-depth look at the causes and risk factors for lung cancer, particularly the strong link between smoking and the development of the disease. He discussed the symptoms of lung cancer, such as persistent cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath, and stressed the importance of early detection through screenings like low-dose CT scans. Dr. Karimundakl also reviewed the various treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and newer targeted therapies that have improved outcomes for many patients.
The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, where participants had the opportunity to ask the experts about their concerns and seek personalised advice. This interactive segment was particularly valuable, as it allowed attendees to clarify their doubts and gain a deeper understanding of how to manage and prevent these types of cancer.

The "Aarogy Jagar" series is a monthly event designed to educate the community on essential medical topics, providing direct access to expert advice from leading healthcare professionals. These sessions, held on the last Sunday of every month, have become a valuable resource for those looking to enhance their understanding of health and well-being. This particular session was dedicated to understanding diabetes, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and poses a significant public health challenge.
The event featured three expert speakers, each focusing on a different aspect of diabetes. The session began with Dr. Sonali Kagne, a respected endocrinologist, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on "Know Your Diabetes." She highlighted the role of lifestyle choices in managing diabetes, emphasising the importance of diet, exercise, and regular monitoring. Dr. Kagne also discussed the latest advancements in diabetes treatment, including medications and insulin therapy, offering attendees a thorough understanding of how to manage this chronic condition effectively.
Following Dr. Kagne’s session, Dr. Samyak Mulkutkar, a Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, addressed the audience on "Diabetes and the Eye." Dr. Mulkutkar shed light on the various eye complications associated with diabetes, including diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma. He explained how high blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision problems and, in severe cases, blindness. Dr. Mulkutkar emphasized the importance of regular eye check-ups for diabetics, providing insights into early detection and treatment options to prevent vision loss. His presentation was particularly impactful, as many participants were unaware of the serious implications diabetes can have on eye health.
The final session was led by Dr. Anirudha Kulkarni, an experienced interventional radiologist, who discussed "Diabetic Foot." Dr. Kulkarni focused on the complications diabetes can cause in the feet, such as neuropathy, poor circulation, and the risk of infections. He provided practical advice on foot care for diabetics, including tips on daily inspection, proper footwear, and how to recognize early signs of problems. Dr. Kulkarni also explained the role of interventional radiology in treating severe cases, such as peripheral artery disease, which can lead to ulcers and, in extreme cases, amputation if not managed properly.
The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where participants had the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers. This segment was highly valued by the attendees, as it allowed them to seek personalized advice and clarify any doubts they had about managing diabetes and its complications.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a more serious condition, was also a focal point of Dr. Anirudha Kulkarni’s presentation.
