On Saturday, July 27, 2024, the "Aarogy Jagar" initiative continued its mission to promote health awareness and education with a focused session on cancer, one of the most challenging and impactful health issues of our time. Organised by Kulkarni Clinics and Balvikas Sangh, Chembur, this event was held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, drawing a dedicated group of around 50 participants. As with all "Aarogy Jagar" events, this session was open to the public and free of charge, underscoring the organisers' commitment to making vital health information accessible to everyone.
The "Aarogy Jagar" series is a monthly event designed to provide the community with direct access to expert knowledge on various medical topics. Each session features lectures by leading healthcare professionals, followed by interactive discussions that allow participants to engage directly with the experts. This session, held on the last Saturday of June, was dedicated to discussing three significant types of cancer: Breast Cancer, Uterine Cancer, and Lung Cancer.
The event began with a comprehensive presentation on breast cancer by Dr. Garvit Chitkara, a respected oncologist. Dr. Chitkara provided a detailed overview of breast cancer, including its causes, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. He emphasised the role of regular self-examinations and mammograms in catching breast cancer in its early stages, where it is most treatable. Dr. Chitkara also discussed the latest advancements in breast cancer treatment, including surgery, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies, offering hope and information to those who might be at risk or affected by this condition.
Following Dr. Chitkara’s session, Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni, a Gynaecologist with extensive experience in women's health, addressed the audience on uterine cancer. Dr. Kulkarni explained the different types of uterine cancer, focusing on endometrial cancer, the most common form. She discussed the symptoms to watch for, such as abnormal bleeding, and the importance of early diagnosis. Dr. Kulkarni also highlighted the treatment options available, including surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation, and emphasised the importance of regular gynaecological check-ups, especially for women in high-risk groups.
The final presentation was delivered by Dr. George Karimundakl, an expert in Thorasic Surgeon, who focused on lung cancer. Dr. Karimundakl provided an in-depth look at the causes and risk factors for lung cancer, particularly the strong link between smoking and the development of the disease. He discussed the symptoms of lung cancer, such as persistent cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath, and stressed the importance of early detection through screenings like low-dose CT scans. Dr. Karimundakl also reviewed the various treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and newer targeted therapies that have improved outcomes for many patients.
The event concluded with a lively question-and-answer session, where participants had the opportunity to ask the experts about their concerns and seek personalised advice. This interactive segment was particularly valuable, as it allowed attendees to clarify their doubts and gain a deeper understanding of how to manage and prevent these types of cancer.
The "Aarogy Jagar" event on July 27, 2024, was a significant success, with participants expressing gratitude for the wealth of information provided by the expert speakers. The session not only raised awareness about breast, uterine, and lung cancer but also empowered attendees with knowledge that could potentially save lives through early detection and informed treatment decisions.
