Widea Designs is a practice, producing select
architecture and urban design related projects in the Nagpur, India. By embracing a humanistic approach that considers not only a client's needs and site considerations, but also the cultural and economic environment, solutions are realized that are contextual, yet conceptual and visionary in their intent, effect, and appeal. We believe that each pro

ject possesses a unique set of challenges and opportunities, and these particular factors guide our design processes. By embracing the singularity of each project, we open ourselves to opportunities that not only result in new and creative solutions, but also fully address the specific requirements of each project. We strive to develop solutions that are both client- and context- sensitive, with equal regard to such factors as budget, operational efficiency, long-term maintenance, environmental responsiveness, and compliance. While creativity is always our goal, we concentrate first and foremost on resolving key functional planning challenges, all the while incorporating architectural creativity to each evolving design solution. The buildings we produce come from a detailed understanding of the functions they must fulfil, the conditions they have to provide and the materials from which they are constructed. This understanding is directly translated into form and detail. With each project we learn more about creating forms and places, serving processes and people, and minimising energy use in providing comfortable and healthy environments. We are constantly developing new components, exploring new ways of using materials, and developing innovative environmental responses.

The given design adopts colonial theme having various spatial forms such as corridor, column, screen wall, courtyard, and sloping roofs, utilizes materials featuring natural textures including brick, wood, water, stones, and tiles, etc., and optimizes spatial experience, water form, light, shadows, and other details, with a view to endowing the Marriage venue with enduring design via pure traditional architectural form and spirit.

The brief required a residence for a doctor couple who aspired for a contemporary home that housed not only a living unit but also works and entertainment zones spread across different levels. At the same time, they desired landscape zones that could interconnect with all spaces both horizontally and vertically. The clients’ penchant was towards a modernist vocabulary that amalgamated the habitable spaces with the landscape design. Set across four levels, the house effortlessly intertwines the brief.

The built form is basically divided into three main spaces. One, dedicated to the daytime activities such as lounging, eating, cooking and entertaining. A second space flanking along the swimming pool and the deck holds the bath and restrooms. Lastly, an elevated space is positioned right across these spaces for a good night’s sleep. The material play of this project strikes a balance between vernacular tones and contemporary hues bringing in warmth and elegant attitudes at the same time to bring the balance of modernity.

The client’s personality embraces a modern lifestyle, at the same time are very nostalgic about their ancestral village of the central Vidarbha region. The process culminated in the idea of making spaces that evoke one’s collective memory of the region, at the same time relying on modern architectural characteristics. Further briefed to a concept of creating a “Modern, Abstract, but relatable aesthetics.

The drive to the farmland from the city takes you through the rural route of the jungles of Nagpur, Maharashtra, casting impressions of the local village settlements that have a strong character of rural material palette and simplicity in architectural style bringing a sense of rootedness and humbleness in the lifestyle, a contrast to the city life. The clients strongly wished to have a slice of this rural palette for their weekend getaway. And, we as architects had our Contemporized take on it.
