We are facing water shortage issues these days as the rains are behind schedule.
Many housing societies have limited hours of water supply, for a couple of hours in the morning and for sometime in the evenings.
This is a very good opportunity for us to understand just how our body works too. Lets see..
We have water supply from 6am to 9am and then from 6pm to 9pm.
How do we plan and execute our tasks in this limited situation?
Ask anyone and we get this routine as the answer.
Wake up on time and get done with the brushing, nature calls first. Once that's taken care of, proceed to the laundry - turn on the washing machine. Cleaning of the house is next tackled. Somewhere in between take a shower.
Head to the kitchen and start with the basic meal preparations - washing, soaking, cooking. We may get the chance for a cup of tea or some quick fruit in the meantime. Next we try to even wash off the few vessels used by then.
If we notice - all these are water dependent activities. Cleaning of all sorts and cooking. And all these also involve movements. Getting up and moving about to get things done.
Even though we had to start early and stay focussed on the tasks, once the water stops by 9am, ta daa..
We are good. Lot of the daily chores done and our food is ready too.
Now lets take a comparative look at the system inside us.
Ayurved advises us to wake up between 4 to 6am. Thats the time for the Air element. Equaling to rising, movement, activeness.
We are meant to clean our minds and bodies inside out and exercise during the following hours. 6 to 10am is when the Earth and Water element are at its highest in our system.
So we are asked to use this water to hydrate, lubricate, cleanse and prepare for (digesting/internal cooking) a meal.
We are also to drink water/other fluid rich preparation/ fruits (in summers) at this time. This helps keep up the energy and form a good solvent in the stomach for the food that will follow..
Just as with limited water supply we dont think of laying in bed until late morning or sitting down to gobble up a heavy breakfast before 9am, knowing well that if we do that, we shall have to face a drought condition throughout the day and nothing will get done properly. Not to mention the irritation all the mess around will cause.
This brings us to the logical understanding that we must follow this schedule for our health even on days with 24hours external water supply. Because the water supply in our bodies always sticks to the sun's schedule. In a hot climate like ours, once the boss is high up in the sky, our internal water supplies are limited. So we'll do well collaborating with nature and following its cycles.
Detoxing, kindling the digestive fire for optimum digestion and metabolism and thus maintenance of good long term health are all taken care of with this simple discipline of waking up on time, being active and assisting the body's natural cycles.
