LEARNING Points for a New Mother Before Discharge
**🎉 Congratulations on your new baby! Before you go home, make sure you feel confident about direct breastfeeding. Here are a few important things to learn before discharge:**
* Learn direct breastfeeding from your **nurse, lactation consultant, pediatrician, or postnatal care team** while you are still in the hospital.
* Request a **hands-on breastfeeding demonstration** and practice feeding your baby under supervision.
* Learn how to identify a **good latch**—baby’s mouth should be wide open, with more of the ar**la in the mouth, not just the ni**le.
* Understand different **breastfeeding positions** such as cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, football hold, and side-lying position.
* Learn to recognize **early hunger cues**: rooting, lip smacking, sucking movements, hand-to-mouth activity, and restlessness.
* Feed your baby **on demand**, aiming for 8–10feeds in 24 hours.
* Learn how to tell if your baby is **swallowing milk effectively** during feeds.
* Understand signs that your baby is getting enough milk: adequate wet diapers, regular stools, and good weight gain.
* Ask how to manage common concerns such as **engorgement, sore ni**les, and sleepy feeding**.
* Keep your baby **skin-to-skin** as often as possible to support breastfeeding and bonding.
* Know whom to contact after discharge if you face breastfeeding difficulties.
* Before leaving, perform at least one successful feeding session and have it assessed by your healthcare team.
**A little learning before discharge can make your breastfeeding journey at home much more comfortable and confident.** 🌸🤱👶+
