Steal syndrome, also called Dialysis Access–Associated Steal Syndrome (DASS), is a complication of an AV fistula or AV graft in which blood is diverted through the vascular access, reducing blood flow to the distal hand.

🔄 What happens?
AV fistula created → low-resistance pathway develops → blood preferentially flows through the fistula → less arterial blood reaches the hand → distal ischemia

Think of it as:
Artery → 🩸 AV fistula → large amount of blood flow
↘️ Reduced flow → Hand → ❗ Ischemia
