"Will I need surgery — and will it affect my control?"
The two questions every fistula patient asks.
There isn't one operation. The choice depends on where the tunnel runs and how much muscle it crosses:
🔹 Simple, low fistula → a straightforward procedure with good healing
🔹 Complex or high fistula → muscle-sparing techniques, because protecting continence matters as much as closing the tunnel
🔹 Laser and minimally invasive options → less pain, faster recovery, suitable for selected cases
🔹 Seton placement → sometimes used first, to drain and settle a complex fistula before definitive surgery
That's why the MRI mapping in part 2 matters — it decides which of these is right for you.
