Two out of three Indians with diabetes have a fatty liver. They do not drink. It was never that kind of disease.

That figure is 66.4%, and it is not an estimate from a survey. It comes from the Phenome India cohort — 7,764 adults scanned on a FibroScan, published in Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia this year. Among the 1,927 participants with diabetes, 1,280 had fatty liver.

In the cohort as a whole it was 47.8%. India’s own Health Ministry guideline puts the range at 40 to 80% in type 2 diabetes and 60 to 90% in obesity.

Can food really help a fatty liver? Yes. Diet is still the main treatment. 🍲

Fatty liver is very common in India, even in people who are not overweight.

There is no magic pill and no miracle cure. Losing some weight and changing daily food habits remain the most proven approach.

These 7 foods are linked with a healthier liver: black coffee, fatty fish, walnuts, oats, leafy greens, dal, and olive oil.

What you remove matters just as much. Cut sugary drinks, deep-fried snacks, and alcohol.

Start today: swap your evening biscuits for a small handful of walnuts, and add one green sabzi to your thali. For fish, local options like bangda (mackerel) and sardines work well.

What if you could watch your blood sugar like a movie, not just one photo? 📈
A glucose sensor (CGM) checks your sugar day and night, not only at the moment you prick your finger.
The 2026 diabetes care standards now suggest starting a sensor early, even around the time of diagnosis, for people who can benefit.
A fingerstick shows one moment. A sensor shows the full story of your day — your meals, your walks and your sleep.
Seeing these patterns helps you learn which foods and habits move your numbers, so managing sugar feels less like guessing.
Practical step: If you are curious, ask your doctor whether even a short sensor trial suits you, so you can see how your usual roti, rice, dal and evening chai actually affect your sugar.
Transparency: I have served on advisory boards of companies that make glucose sensor and insulin device technologies. This post names no brand and recommends no product.

Some foods never taste “sweet”. Your blood sugar disagrees. 🧊
1️⃣ Packaged fruit drink: a 200 ml pack can carry approx. 26 g sugar — about 6 cubes. It is a soft drink with a fruit picture on it.
2️⃣ Flavoured yogurt: one small cup can hide approx. 13 g sugar — about 3 cubes. Plain dahi has no added sugar at all.
3️⃣ Tomato ketchup: approx. 4 g sugar per tablespoon — about 1 cube. And very few of us stop at one spoon.
4️⃣ Chocolate cereal: approx. 9 g sugar in one 30 g bowl — about 2 cubes, before you even add milk. That is dessert at 8 AM.
5️⃣ The rule: read the BACK of the pack, not the front. The front is marketing. The back label is the truth.
These are typical label values. Your pack may differ — so check “total sugars” per serving on YOUR pack. That one habit protects you in every shop in India.
Simple swaps: nimbu pani or a whole fruit instead of packaged juice. Plain dahi with fresh fruit instead of flavoured yogurt. Poha or upma with vegetables instead of sweet cereal.

Your blood sugar report can look perfectly normal for years while insulin is already working overtime.

That is the part most people miss. Insulin resistance is not a sudden event. It builds quietly, and the body often shows it on the skin and around the waist long before a sugar reading crosses the line.

Dark, velvety skin at the back of the neck. Skin tags around the neck or armpits. Darkening at the knuckles or elbows. These are not just cosmetic. They are recognised skin markers linked with high circulating insulin.

Then measure your waist. For Asian Indians the cut-off for abdominal obesity is lower than Western cut-offs — 90 cm and above in men, 80 cm and above in women. A belly that refuses to shrink despite dieting deserves attention.

Feeling heavy and sleepy after lunch, brain fog by evening, a craving for something sweet at 4 PM — these are clues, not a diagnosis. Many things can cause them.

Only a test decides. Ask for fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, and if needed an oral glucose tolerance test. These three diagnose. Symptoms only raise suspicion.

If two or three of these fit you, do not wait for a “high” report. Insulin rises before sugar does. That gap is your window — and it is the easiest stage to reverse course.

Save this. Send it to the person in your family who says “my sugar is normal, I checked last year.”

Is gud (jaggery) a “safe sugar” for diabetes? Let us be honest. 🍯
MYTH: “Jaggery is fine because it is natural.”
FACT: Jaggery is still sugar. It raises blood sugar much like white sugar.
FACT: The small bit of iron and minerals in gud does not cancel out the sugar load.
FACT: “Natural” does not mean you can eat it freely.
Practical tip: Treat gud the same way you treat sugar. A tiny piece now and then is okay for most people, but it is not a green light to eat more. With your evening chai, roasted chana or a few nuts will raise your sugar far less than a sweet.

Can type 2 diabetes be delayed? One of the most important trials in diabetes care says yes. 🔬
The Diabetes Prevention Program followed 3,234 adults with prediabetes.
One group made simple changes: a modest 7% weight loss and about 150 minutes of walking a week.
That group cut their risk of developing diabetes by 58% compared to placebo.
A medicine group (metformin) cut risk by 31%. Here, lifestyle did even more than the pill.
Honest caveat: the trial ran only about 3 years. Prevention is not a one-time fix. The habits have to continue.
Start today: a 30-minute walk after dinner and slightly smaller rice portions. Small, steady changes move the needle more than any crash plan.
