Ayurveda, literally means “Science of life” in Sanskrit, is the traditional system of medicine which was originated in Indian subcontinent over 5000years ago. It is considered to be the Mother of all healing systems because of its sophisticated philosophy and significant impact on the medical development. Thousands years later this ancient wisdom has a global acceptance today as the only system of
medicine in the world, which has methods to totally rejuvenate the body and the mind. The World Health organization recognizes it as a traditional system of medicine that has a significant impact on health care system. Although there are many instances where the diseases process and acute conditions can best be treated with modern drugs or surgery Ayurveda can also treat many diseases especially the chronic diseases, lifestyle related diseases and more over eradicating the root cause of the disease process to eliminate and prevent the recurrence of the disease. It also could be integrated with the practice of modern medicine for the better management of the disease and to avoid the side effects and adverse effects of chemical drugs by reducing the required high doses of medicaments. The approach of Ayurveda is holistic not only in finding the root cause, management and treatment but also in treating different levels of the human physiology and pathology such as Body, Mind and Consciousness and also the environment of the patient. Ayurveda is not just a mere system of medicine to treat diseases. As its name “wisdom of life” suggests, it is a way of life that includes healthy eating and nutrition, use of super-foods, body work, massage, life style methods, mental relaxation and stress management techniques and herbal medicines, which brings us well-being and longevity. Its aim is not only to cure the sickness but also to enhance the positive health, youthfulness and the quality of life in its maximum potential.
