🎓 MORE THAN 500 UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ROME LEARNED WHY ENDOMETRIOSIS CANNOT KEEP BEING MISSED IN ADOLESCENTS!

Endometriosis does not suddenly appear in adulthood, it often starts in teenage years.

The European project Mona Lisa Smile was presented to more than 500 students at the University of Rome Tor Vergata by Prof. Enrico Zupi (University of Siena) together with Project Coordinator Sara Beltrami.

Scientific evidence shows that:
● Up to 70% of women with endometriosis report symptoms before age 20
● Up to 40% before age 15
● Endometriosis is highly prevalent among adolescents with chronic pelvic pain
● Diagnostic delay still averages around 7 years

Seven years in which many young women experience: chronic pain, missed school days, psychological distress, repeated medical consultations and feelings of not being believed.

Mona Lisa Smile was created to change this reality.

Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, the project aims to strengthen professional education and improve early diagnosis of endometriosis in adolescence through innovative digital tools and international educational collaboration.

The project develops:
● A digital training platform (MOOCs) for healthcare professionals
● Educational resources focused on adolescent endometriosis
● Awareness and dissemination activities across Europe
● Training aimed at improving diagnostic capacity and multidisciplinary care

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce diagnostic delay and improve the future of thousands of young patients.

🚨 ENDOMETRIOSIS STARTS EARLY. BUT DIAGNOSIS STILL COMES YEARS TOO LATE.

🇪🇺 The European project Mona Lisa Smile was presented in 2 scientific sessions during the European Endometriosis Congress 2026 in Bologna by Dr. Emanuela Spagnolo (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid) and by Project Coordinator Sara Beltrami.

The EEC is one of the leading European congresses dedicated to endometriosis, bringing together hundreds of researchers, clinicians, healthcare professionals and international organisations working to improve diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for patients worldwide.

Data are alarming:
● Up to 70% of women report symptom onset before the age of 20
● Up to 40% before age 15
● Endometriosis has been found in up to 64% of adolescents undergoing laparoscopy for pelvic pain
● Up to 70% in adolescents with treatment-resistant pelvic pain

Yet diagnostic delay is still estimated at around 7 years.

Mona Lisa Smile project, is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, and it develops digital education and professional training focused on adolescent endometriosis, with the goal of improving early recognition and reducing diagnostic delay across Europe.

The project includes:
● A digital training platform (MOOCs) for healthcare professionals
● Structured educational content focused on adolescent endometriosis
● Awareness and educational digital materials

“The presence of endometriosis in the adolescent young woman was compared to a Mona Lisa smile with a mysterious innocence. The complaints are common and elicit compassion, but do not stimulate a search for the cause.” (Ivo Brosens 2013).

Awareness changes outcomes.
Education changes diagnosis.
Early recognition can change an entire life!

🌸 During the Italian “Corso di Alta Formazione in Ginecologia Endocrinologica e della Riproduzione”, Dr. Del Forno gave an insightful talk on the challenges of diagnosing endometriosis in adolescence.

💡As part of the Mona Lisa Smile project, she highlighted how early detection is critical in improving the quality of life for young women.

Her intervention emphasized the need for increased awareness, innovative approaches, and tailored care for adolescent patients.
