We are into the first official week of May, Mental Health Awareness Month. And to start the month, we watched America's most exciting 2 minutes in sports - an event and celebration that has kept Americans full of hope and something to celebrate (together) since 1875! The Kentucky Derby brings us all together, full of energy and celebration... and usually has an amazing story of the underdog who pulls off the best feat ever! Congrats to the 2025 winner, Sovereignty!
Seabiscuit is probably my favorite race horse (Yes, I love Secretariat too!). No, he did not run the Kentucky Derby, but he won other important races, such as the match race against the Triple Crown winner, War Admiral. He was a scrappy horse; he did not have a famous pedigree, he was shorter than his competition, and he overcame mental defeat (being taught to lose, and a near career-ending injury). However, with love, hope, and encouragement, he proved that greatness can come from unexpected places.
Seabiscuit became an important symbol of hope and perseverance during the darkest days of the Great Depression, both mental and economic hardship. This undersized, overlooked Thoroughbred captured the hearts of a nation desperately seeking a reason to believe in the possibility of overcoming adversity. To keep moving forward. To find something to live for.
✅ Resilience: Seabiscuit's journey illustrates the power of resilience and the ability to overcome challenges, emphasizing that hard work and determination can lead to extraordinary victories.
✅ Belief in Oneself: His story highlights the importance of believing in oneself, even when faced with adversity, which can be a powerful message for mental health.
✅ Support and Healing: The support Seabiscuit received from his trainer and companions, despite his struggles, underscores the significance of having a supportive network in mental health recovery.
HOPE has a strong healing power over Mental Health. With hope, we find the strength to try something new, to persevere, to seek help, and to believe in a better tomorrow.

I have been in various stages of mental health throughout my adulthood, but I do know that through support, faith/hope, and heroic stories like Seabiscuit, I have kept moving forward! My inbox and message center are always open to chat... Let's "Get Better" together! ❤️
