2026年8月、中国・西安。
仕事を終えた一行に、次なるミッションが待ち受けていた。
目的地——楡林。さらなる奥地へ。
しかしその矢先、スマートフォンに飛び込んできた一報。
「大型台風13号、翌日のフライトルートに直撃予報」
沈黙。
そして、ボスは口を開いた。
「帰れないと、日本の患者さんに迷惑がかかる。
学会はオンラインでもできる。——今すぐ帰る」
決断まで、3秒だったかもしれない。
西安から上海へ、深夜の長距離移動。
欠航ギリギリの早朝フライト。
そして——滑り込むように、日本の空へ。
後日談として、学会は悪天候により延期になったという。
あの3秒の判断が、すべてを正解にした。
August 2026. Xi'an, China.
Our work there was finished — and the next mission was already waiting.�Destination: Yulin. Further inland.
But just as we set out, an alert lit up a phone.
"Major Typhoon No. 13 — forecast to hit tomorrow's flight route head-on."
Silence.
Then the boss spoke.
"If we can't get back, it's our patients in Japan who pay for it.�The conference can be done online. — We go home. Now."
The decision may have taken all of three seconds.
Xi'an to Shanghai, a long haul deep into the night.�A dawn flight, caught moments before the cancellations.�And then — slipping through by inches — into the skies over Japan.
We heard later that the conference was postponed anyway, because of the weather.
That three-second call made all of it right.
