This is our birthday gift for Hatsumi Sensei: a set of fourteen, A3 size prints. This set features two photos of Sensei and twelve of his artworks (ten from the ‘Earth’ book and two from ‘Heaven’). We’ll print in October, deliver in November, and give one set to Sensei at his (early) birthday party on October 25th, 2024. How many A3 prints should we make? On Sept 21st, I was the guest instructor at the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo in Ohio. During our training break, I shared samples (proof prints) of something new I’m publishing for Hatsumi Sensei: a set of fourteen, A3 size prints. This set of prints feature two photographs of Hatsumi Sensei and twelve of his artworks (ten from the ‘Earth’ book and two from ‘Heaven’). The photos of Hatsumi Sensei looked great on the wall with the Dayton Dojo’s kamidana. We’ll print these in October, deliver in November, and give one set to Hatsumi Sensei at his (early) birthday party on October 25th, 2024. These prints are available for preorder now. Nagato Sensei and Andrius Zaidovas asked me to help with the Taikai in Lithuania (May 2024) so I'll be there. In addition to translating, during the Taikai Dinner I'll speak about Hatsumi Sensei's art.

Last week, I had the pleasure of giving 'Earth' to Nagato Sensei. Putting the final product in his hands was particularly fun because I've shared drafts with him over the years, and also because he heard my speeches about the book at the Taikai in Dayton, Ohio and at the Taikai in St Ingbert, Germany. I appreciate the opportunity I've had to publish Hatsumi Sensei's Dojo Giga series of art books, and I look forward to sharing 'Earth' with everyone.

⁂ ‘Earth’ is printed and binding is done. Our books are scheduled to leave the printer (in China) on December 25th, 2023. Books for Canada and the US will go by boat to our warehouse near Seattle (I’m confirming our boat’s schedule now).
⁂ Our warehouse in China will post directly to addresses in Japan, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand — supporters in those locations are scheduled to receive their books in early January.
⁂ This is a photo of Hatsumi Sensei’s ‘Earth’ book (I gave it at his birthday celebration on December 2nd). I look forward to sharing ‘Earth’ with everyone!

Today (Dec 2nd, 2023) we celebrated Hatsumi Sensei’s birthday. I gave him ‘Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Earth’ and said, “600 supporters pre-ordered ‘Earth’ so this book really is from all of us.” I showed guests the book and explained that it’s printed, available for pre-order, and scheduled to begin delivery within 2023. Our birthday guest of honor (Hatsumi Sensei) was regrettably absent (due to a fever), but we wished him a happy birthday as best as we could. Guests wrote notes and left gifts. We had dojo announcements, speeches, food (plus a few drinks), and enjoyed catching up with friends. This weekend, students around the world will celebrate Sensei’s birthday. I’m glad I could share this brief video from our 大光明祭 in Noda.

In ‘Earth’ you’ll see Hatsumi Sensei’s paintings and comments, plus translations and footnotes — everything in its place — giving the pages a natural flow. But when I look at ‘Earth’ I recall my interviews with him. Our conversations produced the quotations that we wrote into ‘Earth’. Those who know Sensei will hear his voice in these quotations. This authenticity comes from our method: we created transcripts from his spoken word and then wrote these with minimal edits. Undoubtedly, many Bujinkan students will value this feature of ‘Earth’ most. Sensei’s words. His mentorship.
