MAMA, WHEN DID YOUR PERIOD RETURN AFTER CHILDBIRTH?
Some women get their period back just a few weeks after childbirth.
Some don't see it for several months.
And some breastfeeding mamas may go many months without seeing their period at all.
So, what is normal?
After childbirth, your hormones need time to settle. Your body also needs to return to its normal menstrual cycle.
One major factor is whether you are breastfeeding, especially exclusively breastfeeding.
When you breastfeed frequently, the hormone responsible for milk production can suppress ovulation. This can delay the return of your period.
That is why one mama may tell you:
“I saw my period 6 weeks after delivery.”
Another may say:
“Mine came back after 3 months.”
And another may say:
“My baby was already 8 months before I saw my period.”
All of these can happen.
And mama, please remember this very important point:
NOT SEEING YOUR PERIOD DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN YOU CANNOT GET PREGNANT.
You can ovulate before your first period comes back.
So if you are not planning another pregnancy yet, don't rely only on the absence of your period. Discuss a suitable contraceptive option with your healthcare provider.
Also, when your period eventually returns, it may not look exactly like what you had before pregnancy.
Your first few periods may be heavier, lighter, longer, shorter, irregular or accompanied by different cramps.
Your cycle may take some time to settle.
However, please seek medical attention if you are having very heavy bleeding, passing very large clots, severe pain, dizziness/fainting, fever, or bleeding that concerns you, especially if you are still within the early postpartum period.
And one more thing...
If you stopped bleeding after childbirth and then suddenly start having heavy bleeding, don't automatically assume it is your period. Postpartum bleeding has different causes and should be assessed when it is unusually heavy or associated with warning signs.
So, Mama, tell us in the comments:
When did your period return after childbirth?
4 weeks?
6 weeks?
3 months?
6 months?
Or you are still waiting?
Let's learn from one another.
