Building resilient communities through promotive and preventive health.

Department of health conducted and integrated outreach service at Lorora Lo Lmasula in Lulu/Lorrok Lolmongo...The key emphasis was on health promotion and education messages in a bid to prevent ailments of public health concern,; Waterborne diseases remains rampant among the communities residing near water points and the water contamination is high.

During the exercise mass health education was done with a special emphasis of behaviours change continuum. Households were supported with water treatment tabs(initially aquat tabs +purr distributed).

Through our community's unique celebration, the department of health is prepared to shield communities from preventable diseases while also providing treatment services to the best of its abilities.

They say the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.. Lteroi, tereenkwe and lolmanture villages in the far flanks of samburu east rose up to the sputtering sound of a vooming track.

Guided by the clarion going for the unreached, reaching behind the last mile, Department of health services Samburu took health service closer to the people.
Lteroi village and its environs are one of the remotest villages in the heartland of samburu with no road work connectivity with health facilities being located quite a distance away. Children born in these remote areas continue to miss the key jabs of life which are very important when building community immunity of preventable diseases such measles rubella, polio among many.

Pregnant mothers also face a significant challenge to access maternal health services which promotes the well being of a mother and their unborn child. A department of health is Cognizant to all this and reach out to pastoralists in interiors, our level one unit continues to scale health services to the grassroots.

To support and supplement their efforts, the ministry of health, persons of influence and probitas foundation conducted and integrated outreach which was well planned and coordinated by the sub county health management Samburu East. Through this outreach, many children who missed the jabs were immunised, antenatal mothers were attended, nutrition screening was also done with community benefiting from free consultation and treatment. Mobile ultrasound services were also done to pregnant mothers, one of the key scan in antenatal care.

The medical outreach was graced by CECM health Samburu county Dr. Nasir Lekudere alongside other senior staff from Samburu East sub county.

Our services remain free of charge and are meant to supplement and support peripheral facilities especially with hard to reach areas.

Following the concerns and images shared in various social media platforms as raised by the community of Loiragai, the CECM health accompanied by the sub county health team made an Impromptus visit to the Loiragai dispensary just to substantiate the real cause of alarm. It was alleged that the facility is always closed with the staff being reported as chronic absentees. The alarmists who raised the issue also noted that the facility had no medicine despite the county receiving a good supply from kemsa. He also noted that the dispensary had no fence.

Upon inspection, the CECM health together with the accompanying health managers acknowledged that the facility had no fence but plans are under to have one based on the priorities list of needs.

During the visit it was found out that the nurse in charge was present in the facility, though she is the only staff serving the larger populations. At times the department might invite her to attend key capacity building workshops, on some occasions she might be engaged in community outreaches programs might necessitate the staff to close the facility.
The inspecting team also found out that the dispensary has a constant supply of medicines from kemsa and at no time did the facility experience any shortage. The dispensary also utilises the new taifa care system to serve its patients.

Community members interviewed confirmed and reaffirmed the staff is always present contrary to what was alluded in the gutter press.

CECM health Dr Nasir Lekudere made a rallying call to the community to support their facilities as well as staff. He noted that health facilities play a key to serve all irrespective of their race, religions and political affiliations. He noted that constant attack on hard working health workers might discourage them from discharging their duties as required. He noted that on many occasions health staff go beyond the battle fields to rescue the injured while endangering their own lives. He challenged the whistleblowers to do so with decorum and with factual evidence rather than acting on malice and which haunt or they risk crushing the spirit of our dedicated health workers.

Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any county can have. The ministry of health samburu, bring this unique surgical camp to the people in otoo (North). From 9th to 10th April, a free surgical camp shall be taking place with key focus to the common conditions that needs unique surgeries.

The surgical camp is the first of its kind in the entire north and we implore all those who might be battling various conditions to come out and seek help.

Health is a shared responsibility, with prevention being more effective than cure. Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

Through our ongoing community outreaches, the Department of health samburu with the support from the person of influence (POI) conducted an inclusive medical community outreach in Tamiyoi village; one of the most densely populated suburbs of Maralal. The village sits at the base of kirisia forest with most occupants being peasant farmers and charcoal harvesters. Their unique occupation has continued to project them as "a village with poor health seeking behaviours".

To address all this amongst many other prevailing circumstances, the health department in conjunction with persons of influence, took services closer to their door steps. Of the very many services on offer were:
* Children immunization
* ANC clinics services
* Nutrition screening
* Mobile laboratory service
* Free Medical consultation and treatment.
* Family planning services
* Health promotion and education
* HPV immunization targeting eligible girls in the adjacent schools.
* Mental health awareness.
* Referral and linkages.

Alongside all this, the team also conducted home visits to clients with special needs such the vision impaired, mentally challenged and the elderly.

Present to oversee the exercise was the sub county health management team samburu central, staffs from the samburu county teaching and referral hospital, shabaa dispensary staffs drawn from tamiyoi community unit as well the CEO Persons of influence Madam Miriam Chege alongside staffs of the said organisation.

Tamiyoi medical outreach serves as the fourth after an outreach conducted in Lchakwai, Kirimon and Noonkek market. The Department of health is determined to go beyond the last mile, to protect and empower and shield communities from all preventable illnesses. We are the custodians of our bodies. We must take action to employ healthy lifestyle habits to prevent, reduce, and/or manage disease and illness.
