Healthy calf rearing is crucial for the future
1. Colostrum Management. ๐Ÿ“‘

Give colostrum within 2 hours of birth, ideally within the first hour.

Ensure the productivity of cattle herds, especially in countries like Kenya where livestock plays a significant role in rural economies. Here are key strategies for healthy calf rearing in Kenya:
calf consumes 10% of its body weight in colostrum within the first 24 hours.

Use clean feeding equipment to avoid infections.

2. Proper Nutrition ๐Ÿ“‘

After colostrum, feed good-quality milk or milk replacer for the first 2-3 months.

Introduce calf starter feed from day 7 to develop the rumen.

Provide clean, fresh water at all times, especially in hot climates.

3. Hygiene and Housing ๐Ÿ“‘

Keep the calving area clean and dry to reduce disease risk.

Calves should be kept in well-ventilated, dry, and comfortable housing.

Clean feeding buckets and bedding regularly to avoid bacterial buildup.

4. Vaccination and Disease Control ๐Ÿ“‘

Follow a vaccination schedule against common diseases (like FMD, HS, BQ).

Deworm calves regularly starting from 3-4 weeks of age.

Monitor for signs of scours and pneumonia, and treat promptly.

5. Navel Care ๐Ÿ“‘

Dip the calfโ€™s navel in iodine solution right after birth to prevent infections.

6. Identification and Record Keeping

Use ear tags or tattoos to identify calves.

Keep records of birth date, weight, health treatments, and feeding.

7. Weaning Practices ๐Ÿ“‘

Wean calves at around 8-12 weeks, based on weight and feed intake.

Avoid sudden changes in diet to reduce stress.

8. Farmer Education and Training ๐Ÿ“‘

Conduct awareness programs for farmers about modern calf-rearing practices.

Farm X is reporting that 16 years ago, a farmer could easily buy a 20-litre milker cow for about Ksh 17,000. Today, the same cow goes for between Ksh 180,000 and 230,000 โ€” almost 13 times higher. Yet over the same period, the price of milk has only doubled, moving from Ksh 20 per litre to Ksh 40 per litre.

What this means is that it was much easier to recover your investment back then compared to now. Assuming that net profit is half the price of milk, the numbers tell a striking story.

Today, with milk at Ksh 40, the net profit per litre is about Ksh 20. A 20-litre cow therefore brings in Ksh 400 profit per day. With a cow costing around Ksh 200,000, it would take roughly 500 days โ€” or about 1.5 to 2 years โ€” to break even.

But 16 years ago, with milk selling at Ksh 20, the net profit per litre was Ksh 10. That same 20-litre cow earned Ksh 200 profit per day, meaning you could recover the Ksh 17,000 purchase cost in just 85 days โ€” about 3 months.

In short, the cost of acquiring a dairy cow has skyrocketed far faster than the price of milk, stretching recovery periods for farmers from months to years.

How long did it take you to recover your money?

I have an ambitious transformative agenda to have more households in Kenya do dairy farming to improve their income.

It is doable.

When James graduated in 2013 as a trained veterinarian, he returned home in Githunguri, with two goals: serve farmers and build his own agribusiness.

Today, he runs a small but profitable dairy enterprise that proves farming can be a serious business.

James owns 5 dairy cows, each producing an average of 28 litres of milk daily. In total, he gets 140 litres per day. He sells the milk at Ksh 45 per litre, earning him:
140 litres ร— Ksh 45 = Ksh 6,300 per day in revenue.

But income alone does not tell the story โ€” costs matter too. Each cow costs James about Ksh 700 per day in feed, supplements, and care. With 5 cows, his daily expenses are: 5 ร— Ksh 700 = Ksh 3,500 per day.

That means his cost per litre of production is:
Ksh 3,500 รท 140 litres = Ksh 25 per litre.

Since he sells at Ksh 45, his profit per litre is:
Ksh 45 โ€“ Ksh 25 = Ksh 20 profit per litre.

Multiplying that across his daily production:
140 litres ร— Ksh 20 = Ksh 2,800 profit per day.

At this rate, James makes:
โœ… Ksh 19,600 per week (7 days)
โœ… Ksh 84,000 per month (30 days)

For James, the formula is simple: by treating dairy farming as a business โ€” tracking costs, maximizing production, and finding good markets โ€” he earns steady income while still serving his neighbors as a veterinarian.

โ€œEvery litre that comes out of the cow must be accounted for,โ€ he explains. โ€œIf you know your cost per litre and keep it lower than your selling price, you will never go wrong.โ€

In short, Jamesโ€™ cows are not just animals; they are his business partners โ€” producing over Ksh 2,800 net profit every single day.

CRV Holstein cows are famous for the highest lifetime production in the world. This is the result of breeding for production with high components and health for many years. The balance between health and efficiency is what makes our breeding programme so unique. Healthy & efficient cows lead to: Lower costs, Less labour & better dairy and beef with the same amount of feed. After all, the healthier a cow, the more efficiently it will produce.
