THEORY: ANTIBIOTICS

Antibiotics are medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing bacteria or stopping them from multiplying, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection.

1. How antibiotics work

Different antibiotics act in different ways. They may:

Destroy the bacterial cell wall.

Stop bacteria from producing proteins.

Interfere with bacterial DNA replication.

Block important metabolic processes in bacteria.

2. Common classes of antibiotics

Examples include:

Penicillins: Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Cloxacillin

Cephalosporins: Cefixime, Ceftriaxone, Cefuroxime, Cefepime

Macrolides: Azithromycin, Clarithromycin, Erythromycin
