Academia, industry and government came together at the Public Lecture and Stakeholder Engagement Forum on “Academia, Industry and the Trigger for Local Manufacturing” to advance Kenya’s local biopharmaceutical manufacturing agenda. Prof. Stephen Gacheru emphasized that beyond research and science, drug development is an end-to-end ecosystem requiring knowledge, regulation, infrastructure, financing and market readiness to work together.

Dr. Ouma Oluga, OGW, Principal Secretary, State Department for Medical Services, h, called for stronger linkage between research, academia, industry, regulation, financing and procurement to strengthen Kenya’s health independence. He further challenged universities to shift from being primarily publication-driven to becoming proprietary and innovation-driven institutions that convert knowledge into products, enterprises and public health solutions. Dr. Charles Githinni, Kenya BioVax Institute Chairman, noted that local manufacturing must be treated as an end-to-end national health security priority, with plans underway for a dedicated symposium to sustain the momentum.

Advancing Africa’s health security requires stronger coordination between manufacturers, continental institutions, and procurement platforms. In this spirit, the Kenya BioVax team, led by Dr. Cecilia Wanjala, General Manager, Commercial Services, held a stakeholder engagement meeting with the Africa CDC team at the Africa CDC Offices in Nairobi to discuss Africa’s pooled procurement mechanisms. The engagement provided an opportunity to explore how coordinated procurement can improve access to essential health products, support predictable demand, strengthen market pathways for local manufacturers, and contribute to sustainable vaccine and biotherapeutics production across the continent.

Advancing Kenya’s capacity for vaccine and specialized biologics manufacturing requires strong partnerships, evidence-informed planning, and a clear understanding of market opportunities. In this regard, Kenya BioVax Institute held a meeting with PATH to discuss a proposed vaccine landscape assessment aimed at guiding investment priorities, policy decisions, portfolio diversification, and alignment with global health security goals. The Kenya BioVax team, led by Dr. Muteru, engaged the PATH team led by Ruth Wanjala on the importance of co-creating solutions with end users to ensure that future manufacturing priorities respond to public health needs, market realities, and Kenya’s broader ambition of building sustainable local capacity for vaccines and specialized biologics.
