IVI is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Faith Osier as inaugural Director to launch our newly established Kenya Country and AVEC Africa Project Office.

Prof. Osier is an internationally recognized immunologist and vaccinologist with extensive experience in vaccine research and scientific leadership. She is Chair of Immunology and Vaccinology at Imperial College London and previously served as Executive Director of the Human Immunology Laboratory at IAVI.

In this new role, Prof. Osier will oversee IVI’s operations in Kenya, working closely with the IVI Africa Regional Office, Kenyan government authorities, and external partners to advance end-to-end vaccine research and development. She will also support the Advancing Vaccine End-to-End Capabilities in Africa (AVEC Africa) project.

We look forward to Prof. Osier’s leadership in advancing vaccine research, partnerships, and capacity in Kenya and across Africa.

A delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency ( ) and Consulting paid a courtesy call on Dr. Serah Muteru, General Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Product Quality Assurance and Safety at Kenya BioVax Institute. The engagement explored opportunities for strategic partnership in pharmaceutical research and development, vaccine and health-product manufacturing, health-emergency preparedness and sustainable investment. The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration among government, development partners, research institutions and the private sector in strengthening Kenya’s biomanufacturing capabilities, advancing health security and expanding equitable access to essential health products across Africa.

Kenya BioVax has signed a collaborative agreement with BioUsawa , represented by Dr. Menghis Bairu, alongside Dr. Wesley Ronoh of Kenya BioVax. The partnership seeks to accelerate access to vaccines, biologics and other biotherapeutics as Kenya BioVax advances towards local manufacturing. By strengthening knowledge exchange, technology transfer and manufacturing capabilities, the collaboration marks an important step on Kenya’s path towards self-sufficiency in essential health products, reduced reliance on imports and stronger national and continental health security.

Kenya BioVax Institute Limited (KBI) CEO, Dr. Wesley Ronoh, accompanied by Prof. Richard Oduor, General Manager, Research and Technology Transfer, paid a courtesy call on Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, PhD., Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Innovation. The engagement focused on strengthening Kenya’s capacity in vaccine research, development and manufacturing, while accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into commercially viable vaccines and other health technologies that respond to national and continental needs. The discussions also explored opportunities for greater investment in biotechnology, genomics, specialised human capital and technology transfer, alongside stronger collaboration among Government, academia, research institutions and industry.

KBI underscored the importance of ensuring that increased investment in research delivers measurable returns through locally manufactured health products, skilled employment, economic opportunities and greater national self-reliance. Achieving Africa’s ambition of increasing locally produced vaccines from approximately 1% to 60% by 2040 will require sustained financing, capacity development and clear pathways linking research, innovation, commercialisation and production. The courtesy call formed part of KBI’s broader commitment to reducing dependence on imported health products, positioning Kenya as a regional hub for biotechnology and vaccine manufacturing, and building a resilient and sovereign health ecosystem that contributes to Africa’s health security.

Today, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI ) delegation, led by its President and CEO, Dr. Mark Feinberg, paid a courtesy call to Kenya BioVax Institute, where it was received by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wesley Ronoh and the Institute’s leadership team. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in vaccine research and development, clinical trials, technology transfer, workforce capacity building and local manufacturing, with particular emphasis on emerging infectious diseases. The visit provided an opportunity to explore practical areas of cooperation in vaccine development, technology transfer, local manufacturing capacity and Kenya’s broader health security priorities.

A two-day Inception and Alignment Workshop on the Assessment of the Vaccines and Specialized Biologics Manufacturing and Market Landscape in Kenya commenced yesterday at Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts , Nairobi, bringing together representatives from The Ministry of Health , Kenya BioVax Institute, , IAVI , the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute - I , the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), the Pharmacy and Poisons Board , and other key stakeholders. The workshop is providing participants with background on the vaccine manufacturing landscape assessment, aligning stakeholders on the proposed work plan, timelines and expected outputs, and introducing the Human-Centred Design (HCD) approach that will guide stakeholder engagement throughout the process. Through this collaborative approach, the assessment seeks to gather diverse perspectives, strengthen coordination and generate practical, evidence-based recommendations to support Kenya’s development of a resilient and commercially sustainable vaccine and specialized biologics manufacturing ecosystem.
