Her Gut Story

Her Gut Story You've spent years treating your thyroid. But nobody checked your gut. That missing piece is usually why symptoms don't go away.

I help women get clarity on what's really going on. Find out how below

Being exhausted doesn't automatically mean your thyroid is the problem.

Iron deficiency. Low B12. Low vitamin D. Poor nutrient absorption.

They can all create symptoms that look a lot like hypothyroidism, even when thyroid labs come back "normal."

This is why lab literacy matters. Understanding what questions to ask can change the conversation.

‎7 signs women mistake for anxiety that can also happen with hyperthyroidism....

‎👍Read this before you assume it's "just stress." 💛

‎√ Your heart feels like it's racing.

‎A fast or pounding heartbeat can happen with anxiety. It can also happen when the thyroid is overactive.

‎√ You feel shaky for no obvious reason.

‎Trembling hands or feeling "wired" isn't always emotional. Excess thyroid hormone can affect your nervous system.

‎√ You can't switch your brain off.

‎Constant nervousness, restlessness, or feeling on edge can overlap with both anxiety and hyperthyroidism.

‎√ You're exhausted but you can't sleep.

‎Difficulty sleeping can happen with stress. It is also a common symptom of an overactive thyroid.

‎√ You're losing weight without trying.

‎If anxiety symptoms come with unexplained weight loss, it may be worth discussing thyroid testing with a healthcare professional.

‎√ You feel hot when everyone else is comfortable.

‎Heat intolerance and excessive sweating are classic hyperthyroid symptoms that can be mistaken for panic.

‎√ Your anxiety comes with digestive changes.

‎Frequent bowel movements or diarrhea alongside anxiety-like symptoms can sometimes point toward an overactive thyroid.

‎This does NOT mean anxiety isn't real.

‎It means that physical health and mental health can overlap.

‎If anxiety symptoms are persistent, unusual for you, or come with physical changes, a healthcare professional may consider whether thyroid testing is appropriate.

‎💾 Save this for yourself or someone who has been told it's "just anxiety."

7 Things That Can Look Like Thyroid Problems (But Aren't Always Thyroid Problems)

1. LOW IRON

Can Look Like:

• Fatigue
• Hair shedding
• Feeling cold often
• Shortness of breath
• Low stamina

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

Iron helps carry oxygen throughout the body.

When iron stores are low, many women experience tiredness, weakness, and cold intolerance, symptoms that often overlap with hypothyroidism.

2. VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY

Can Look Like:

• Brain fog
• Poor concentration
• Memory lapses
• Fatigue
• Tingling sensations

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

B12 supports nerve health and energy production.

When levels are low, women may notice mental fog, low energy, and neurological symptoms that can resemble thyroid-related complaints.

3. LOW VITAMIN D

Can Look Like
• Low mood
• Fatigue
• Muscle aches
• Reduced motivation
• Feeling generally unwell

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

Vitamin D influences immune, muscle, and nervous system function.

Low levels can create symptoms that overlap with many thyroid complaints, especially fatigue and low mood.

4. POOR SLEEP

Can Look Like:

• Exhaustion despite normal labs
• Brain fog
• Irritability
• Difficulty concentrating
• Low motivation

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

A body that is not recovering during sleep often produces symptoms that look hormonal.

Sometimes the issue is not hormone production. It's inadequate recovery.

5. CHRONIC STRESS

Can Look Like:

• Fatigue
• Anxiety
• Sleep problems
• Digestive changes
• Feeling "off" all the time

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

Stress affects multiple body systems at once.

Over time it can change energy levels, mood, digestion, and sleep patterns, creating symptoms that resemble thyroid dysfunction.

6. BLOOD SUGAR INSTABILITY

Can Look Like:

• Energy crashes
• Brain fog
• Shakiness
• Intense cravings
• Afternoon fatigue

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

The brain relies on a steady supply of fuel.

When blood sugar rises and falls dramatically, symptoms can appear that feel hormonal but are actually related to energy regulation.

7. UNDER-EATING

Can Look Like:

• Low energy
• Feeling cold
• Hair changes
• Poor recovery
• Reduced exercise tolerance

Why It Gets Confused With Thyroid Issues

The body adapts when it consistently receives too little energy.

Sometimes symptoms are not a sign that the body is broken.

They are a sign that the body is trying to conserve resources

THE BIG TAKEAWAY

When symptoms show up, the question is not:

"Is this thyroid?"

The better question is:

"What else could create the same pattern?"

That is how you avoid missing important pieces of the puzzle.

Remember:

A thyroid problem can cause fatigue.

But fatigue alone does not automatically mean a thyroid problem.

The most accurate answers usually come from looking at the whole picture, not one symptom, one lab, or one theory.

Most women think thyroid testing is one number.

It isn't.

If you're still exhausted, foggy, cold, struggling with hair loss, or wondering why you don't feel like yourself despite "normal labs," this framework is for you.

I call it the 5-Layer Thyroid Framework.

LAYER 1: THE SIGNAL

TSH

This is the message sent from the brain to the thyroid.

Think of it as a communication signal.

It tells us whether the brain is asking for more or less thyroid hormone.

Is it Important?

Absolutely.

The whole picture?

Not even close.

LAYER 2: THE HORMONE

T4

This is the main hormone released by the thyroid.

But T4 is mostly a storage hormone.

Having T4 available is important.

Yet availability and actual use are not the same thing.

Many women stop here.

But the body doesn't!

LAYER 3: THE ACTIVE HORMONE

T3

This is where the conversation gets interesting.

T3 is the form your cells actually use.

Your energy.

Your metabolism.

Your ability to stay warm.

Your ability to think clearly.

Much of your T3 comes from converting T4 into a usable form.

Sometimes symptoms and lab results don't seem to match.

This layer helps explain why.

LAYER 4: THE IMMUNE LAYER

Thyroid antibodies.

This is the layer many women never hear about.

Antibodies help reveal whether the immune system is reacting against thyroid tissue.

In some women, immune activity can be present before major hormone changes become obvious.

That means symptoms and standard labs don't always move together.

LAYER 5: THE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

This is the layer that changed how I think about thyroid symptoms.

Iron.

B12.

Vitamin D.

Gut health.

Stress.

Sleep.

Because hormones do not work in isolation.

A thyroid hormone still needs a body capable of using it.

A nutrient deficiency can feel like a hormone problem.

Chronic stress can feel like a hormone problem.

Poor sleep can feel like a hormone problem.

Sometimes the thyroid is the whole story.

Sometimes it is only part of it.

This is why two women can have similar lab results and feel completely different.

One number rarely explains the entire experience.

One layer rarely explains the entire pattern.

So when someone says:

"My labs are normal, but I still don't feel normal."

I don't immediately wonder what's wrong with them.

I wonder which layer hasn't been explored yet.

Most women are told their thyroid is “normal” after a single test.

But a thyroid system is not one number.

It is a network of signals, hormones, conversion steps, and supporting nutrients.

When you only test part of it, you only see part of the story.

Most women don’t get better because they are “not trying.”

They stay stuck because they keep doing things that don’t match the real problem.

When labs are normal but symptoms persist, the mistake is usually not effort.

It is direction.
