TODAY WAS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY,
& we got to spend the day with PELUM Kenya Association as fellow youthful participants promoting and advocatng for more Agroecological practice in our farming ventures. This event was being held Machakos University. We celebrated AGROECOLOGY & the many OPPORTUNITIES GROWING AROUND US.
For decades youth employment was centered around office work but today, the youth are now more hands on in farming and improving the ecosystems around us.
We brought our own perspective on how Beekeeping depends on healthy environments — diverse plants, clean water, and sustainable farming systems.
The takeaway was that agroecology, beekeeping and organic farming create opportunities that are now essential more than ever.
Bee-friendly crops provide food and income through honey and other bee by-products.
Practices like composting, mulching, and crop diversification improve soil and cut costs.
Agroecological farming creates multiple income streams from the same land in a sustainable manner
For young people, this could mean enterprise development & not just survival farming.
For young and new beekeepers it involves production, pollination services, value addition, and agribusiness innovation.
The question should have never been;
“How can young people get jobs?”
But rather:
“How can we help them build sustainable enterprises?”
Because protecting ecosystems that support healthy food systems create future opportunities & Better livelihoods.
