📢 We are excited to announce that APIFA will participate in the 3rd World Local Production Forum (WLPF), taking place from 7 - 9 April 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This high-impact global gathering will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, financial institutions, and development partners to drive sustainable local production of essential health products.

APIFA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frankline Keter, Ph.D., will be a panelist in the session "Connecting the Dots: Financing Local Production Along the Value Chain." He will share insights on innovative financing models to accelerate local manufacturing, drawing from APIFA's expertise in helping manufacturers access funding, scale operations, enhance production capacity, and strengthen supply chain resilience.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in global production capacity and supply chains, delaying access to essential medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics. This underscored the urgent need to strengthen local production to enhance health equity, resilience, and security. The World Local Production Forum (WLPF) serves as a key platform to address these challenges, foster meaningful collaborations, and shape policies that support sustainable development in pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturing.

We look forward to engaging with global stakeholders to explore solutions that advance local production, improve health security, and build resilient supply chains.

We were delighted to attend the 41st IASP - Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation World Conference last week in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by Konza Technopolis. The event offered a great platform for APIFA to further our mission of pursuing upstream engagements that are essential for strengthening Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem—especially concerning Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

One of the key discussions at the conference centered around the impact of changing demographics on entrepreneurship and technology. With Africa’s rapidly growing youth population, there is a tremendous opportunity to harness their potential to drive technological advancements and innovation across the pharmaceutical sector.

Science parks are essential drivers of innovation, serving as hubs where industry, academia, and entrepreneurship intersect to create innovative industries that fuel regional development. They provide affordable, high-quality spaces for collaboration and offer entrepreneurs the opportunity to work alongside industry experts and academic researchers, facilitating the development of cutting-edge technologies and promoting success on a global scale. This synergy creates a thriving knowledge economy that attracts world-class talent and strengthens local industries.

The event highlighted the importance of investing in critical infrastructure—including physical, financial, scientific, and technological resources—that can serve as the backbone of Africa's pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities. As the world faces unpredictable shocks, from new pandemic outbreaks to supply chain disruptions, science and technological advancements, along with continuous research in new medicine development, are more critical than ever.

APIFA continues to actively engage in public-private partnerships focused on the development of life sciences parks, recognizing that collaboration within such innovation hubs is essential for building sustainable ecosystems capable of addressing future challenges. As an ecosystem player advocating for API production, APIFA understands the need for climate-responsive, smart, and sustainable production sites to enhance local manufacturing. Through these partnerships, APIFA remains committed to establishing strong frameworks and enhancing the capacities of local manufacturers to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of life-saving medicines, including through the establishment of life sciences pharma parks. By investing in talent and infrastructure, we are shaping the future of economics and ensuring Africa’s pharmaceutical sector is well-prepared to meet both local and global health needs.
