Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Signs MOU with Oman Armed Forces Hospital… Expanding Global Medical Cooperation

Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital is strengthening global cooperation to expand K-medical throughout the Middle East region.

The hospital announced on the 7th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on October 28 with the Oman Armed Forces Hospital (MCMSS) to enhance medical collaboration.

Through this partnership, Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital aims to establish a sustainable international cooperation system across clinical care, research, and education, while promoting patient-centered K-medical globally. Based on more than a year of mutual exchange and trust since 2024, the two institutions plan to expand collaboration to include:

Establishment of a patient referral system

Operation of medical staff training and education programs

Joint research and academic cooperation

With the signing of this MOU, patients supported by the Omani government will now be able to receive treatment at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. Additionally, through medical staff training visits, the hospital will transfer advanced medical technologies and clinical expertise—including robotic surgery—to Oman. Collaboration will focus on complex and high-risk areas such as hematologic cancers, solid tumors, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, enabling Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital to extend the core DNA of K-medical into the Middle East.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials from both institutions, including Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital President Lee Ji-yeol, Vice President for External Affairs Yang Dong-won, Oman Armed Forces Hospital Director Saleh Al Abri, Oman’s Ambassador to Korea Zakariya Al Saadi, and Deputy Ambassador Lim Al Siyabi.

President Lee stated,
“Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital is leading Asia in advanced medical technologies such as robotic surgery, drawing patients and medical professionals from around the world, including the Middle East. Through this agreement, we hope to build various forms of medical cooperation grounded in mutual trust.”

Director Saleh Al Abri of the Oman Armed Forces Hospital said,
“We expect that Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital’s advanced medical systems and technologies will significantly enhance the clinical and educational capabilities of our hospital. We hope this agreement will further invigorate medical exchanges between Oman and the Republic of Korea.”

Since President Lee presented his vision of “LINK—Leadership and Innovation for the Next era of K-Medical” upon taking office, the hospital plans to continue expanding international cooperation in the coming years.

The “Excellent Medical Tourism Institution” designation, established under the Act on Support for Overseas Expansion of Medical Institutions and Attraction of Foreign Patients, is awarded by the Ministry of Justice—the government authority overseeing immigration affairs—following an evaluation of medical institutions’ performance in attracting and treating foreign patients, as well as their visa approval rates.

As a result of this designation, Bucheon Sejong Hospital and Incheon Sejong Hospital have been granted the authority to invite foreign nationals by applying for electronic visas (e-visas) through the Korea Visa Portal.

Foreign patients using these hospitals can now skip submitting financial proof documents when applying for e-visas, and the range of accompanying caregivers and family members has been expanded to include collateral relatives up to the fourth degree, providing greater convenience during immigration procedures.

Sejong Hospital, which operates the nation’s only heart-specialized hospital, has achieved the “Triple Crown” of medical certifications—including accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), the domestic hospital accreditation for acute care facilities, and the Korea Accreditation Program for Hospitals Serving Foreign Patients (KAHF).

Chairman Park Jin-sik stated,“With this designation as an Excellent Medical Tourism Institution, the convenience for foreign patients visiting Sejong Hospital has been greatly improved. We will continue to provide customized and world-class medical services for both domestic and international patients.”

Seoul Asan Hospital Signs Agreement with Japan’s QST on Carbon Ion Therapy — Aiming for Operation by 2031

(Seoul = News1) Reporter Kim Gyubin — Seoul Asan Hospital has signed an agreement with Japan’s QST (National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology) Hospital to cooperate in education and clinical research related to carbon ion therapy.

Seoul Asan Hospital announced on the 29th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on carbon ion therapy with QST Hospital in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on the 27th (local time). The signing ceremony was attended by Song Si-yeol, head of the Carbon Ion Therapy Project (and director of the Cancer Hospital) at Asan Medical Center, and Hitoshi Ishikawa, director of QST Hospital, along with officials from both institutions.

QST Hospital is the world’s first medical institution to begin carbon ion therapy, starting in 1994. Under this agreement, the two organizations will collaborate in areas such as professional training, patient exchange, and clinical research in carbon ion therapy.

In April, Seoul Asan Hospital signed a contract with the Toshiba ESS–DK Medical Solutions consortium and is pursuing a project to begin operation of its carbon ion therapy system by 2031.

The carbon ion therapy facility will be built on the Asan Hospital campus in Pungnap-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, with a total floor area of 40,880 square meters (about 12,388 pyeong). According to the hospital, it will be the largest facility of its kind in Korea, equipped with two rotating gantry treatment systems and one fixed-beam treatment system. It will also incorporate a CT-based image-guided system to monitor real-time changes in tumor size and position, allowing for precise, personalized treatment.

The carbon ion therapy system will be used to treat prostate, pancreatic, and liver cancers, as well as lung cancer, sarcomas, and recurrent cancers that show resistance to conventional treatments. In addition to carbon ions, other particles such as helium, neon, and oxygen ions can be used to minimize damage to healthy tissues while effectively targeting resistant tumors.

Song Si-yeol, head of the Carbon Ion Therapy Project at Asan Medical Center, stated, “The experience of QST Hospital, which was the first in the world to introduce carbon ion therapy in clinical practice, will be of great help to Asan Hospital. We will continue to expand treatment opportunities for patients with intractable cancers and strive to create a patient-centered treatment environment.”

Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine Expands International Exchanges with Major U.S. Medical Schools

"We will strive to lead the globalization of Korean medicine"

Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine announced on the 20th that it visited Indiana University School of Medicine and the University of Virginia School of Integrative Medicine in the U.S. to conduct Korean medicine education programs and explore ways to strengthen international cooperation.

Medical staff from Jaseng Hospital delivered lectures at the University of Virginia School of Integrative Medicine on September 27.

This program was promoted as part of the “Korean Medicine Overseas Export and Foreign Patient Attraction Support Project” by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Promotion Institute for Traditional Medicine.
Participants included Yoon Young-seok, Director of Jaseng Medical Academy, and other key medical staff and officials. They met with professors and researchers from the universities to discuss plans for international collaboration and toured medical and research facilities. They also provided local medical professionals and students with lectures and training on Korean medicine treatments for musculoskeletal disorders, clinical cases, and educational systems.

Discussions were also held on the co-hosting of the 6th Jaseng International Academic Conference scheduled for next August. Jaseng Hospital has been organizing this academic conference to promote scientific evidence for Korean medicine and enhance its potential role in the future of integrative medicine.

At the University of Virginia School of Integrative Medicine, lectures and hands-on sessions were held on Jaseng’s unique non-surgical spine and joint treatment methods, including Motion Style Acupuncture Treatment (MSAT).

Director Yoon said, “This international exchange was a meaningful opportunity to promote the excellence of Korean medicine and strengthen cooperation with overseas medical professionals. We will continue to expand our global network and take the lead in globalizing Korean medicine.”

Meanwhile, Jaseng Hospital continues its multifaceted efforts for the globalization of Korean medicine through international clinical training programs and internships for foreign medical staff. In July, it became the only East Asian medical institution to receive reaccreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) in the U.S. Earlier this year, it was also the only Asian medical institution invited to present its research achievements at the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health (ACIMH) held in Seattle.

Newsweek Announces World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026: Ten KIMA Member Hospitals Recognized

On September 10 (local time), U.S. current affairs weekly Newsweek released its World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026 rankings, with ten member institutions of the Korea International Medical Association (KIMA) earning places on the list. This achievement once again underscores the global standing of Korean healthcare.

Conducted in collaboration with global data research firm Statista, the annual ranking highlights leading hospitals worldwide across 12 medical fields. The specialties assessed include cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, pulmonology, urology, and obstetrics & gynecology.

In particular, Korea demonstrated remarkable strength in oncology: three Korean hospitals were ranked among the global top 10 in this category, second only to the United States (four hospitals). France, the United Kingdom, and Canada each had one institution listed.

The evaluation is based on three pillars of data:

1. International online survey of medical experts

2. Accreditation data

3. PROMs (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures) Implementation Survey

The scope of the rankings includes: the top 300 hospitals in cardiology and oncology; the top 250 in pediatrics; the top 150 in cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, and orthopedics; and the top 125 in neurosurgery and urology. This year, the number of ranked hospitals in neurology and obstetrics & gynecology was expanded to 150 and 125, respectively.

The following KIMA member hospitals were included in the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026, listed in alphabetical order:

· Asan Medical Center

· Ewha Womans University – Seoul Hospital

· Severance Hospital – Yonsei University

· Hanyang University – Seoul Hospital

· Korea University – Anam Hospital

· National Cancer Center

· Samsung Medical Center

· Seoul National University – Bundang Hospital

· Seoul National University Hospital

· The Catholic University of Korea – Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital

A KIMA representative stated, “This recognition highlights the outstanding expertise and international competitiveness of our member hospitals. KIMA will continue to work with its members to further promote the excellence of Korean healthcare worldwide.”

National Cancer Center Opens Sarcoma Center “Providing Optimal Personalized Treatment

The National Cancer Center announced on the 11th that it held an opening ceremony for its new Sarcoma Center on September 9, with the aim of delivering optimal, personalized treatment to patients with sarcoma, one of the representative rare cancers.

Sarcoma is a rare cancer that occurs in both children and adults, requiring multidisciplinary collaboration throughout the diagnosis and treatment process.

Since 2017, medical staff at the National Cancer Center have organized a “Sarcoma Research Group” to conduct both clinical and basic research. In 2018, they launched a multidisciplinary sarcoma care program, providing tailored treatment for patients.

In particular, the center has been laying the foundation for precision medicine for sarcoma patients through:

Multicenter clinical trials, including Phase I and II trials for recurrent and advanced osteosarcoma, and a Phase II trial of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III soft tissue sarcoma;

Korea’s first study on skeletal reconstruction using 3D printing;

Establishment of a multicenter sarcoma resource-sharing platform, leading to the nation’s first development of a sarcoma-specific cancer gene panel and new drug research as part of next-generation biotechnology initiatives.

Building on these achievements, the Sarcoma Center plans to assign approximately 30 sarcoma patients per day to a dedicated team. Specialists from orthopedic oncology (musculoskeletal tumor clinic), hematology-oncology, pediatrics, radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology will collaborate under the Rare Cancer Center. In addition, the sharing of inpatient care staff, on-call physicians, and physician assistants is expected to enhance hospital efficiency.

Yang Han-Kwang, President of the National Cancer Center, stated, “With the launch of the Sarcoma Center, we expect to further invigorate our clinical and translational research in sarcoma and provide the best possible treatment. The Rare Cancer Center, which encompasses the Sarcoma Center, will be elevated to the Rare Cancer Division, allowing the National Cancer Center to fully uphold its public mission.”

Kim Joon-Hyuk, Director of the Rare Cancer Center, added, “In Korea, approximately 2,000 new sarcoma cases are diagnosed each year, and the number is steadily rising. Through integrated treatment and research involving multiple departments within the Sarcoma Center, we will strive to improve treatment outcomes for sarcoma patients and set an exemplary standard in the field of rare cancers.”
