Believing in yourself is simply not enough. You must believe in your identity.
Our identities govern the decisions we make, the people we surround ourselves with, our habits, our goals and so much more!
Our actions dictate our identity, but our identity also dictates our actions.
Consider them to have an interdependent and reciprocal relationship.
Who you believe yourself to be is usually who you are and, in turn, who you become. If you identify as a healthy, hardworking individual, you will likely engage in actions, routines and commitments that keep you both healthy and hardworking.
I am rereading one of my all time favorite books, Atomic Habits by James Clear. In the book it states:
"The ultimate form of intrinsic motivation is when a habit becomes part of your identity. It’s one thing to say ‘I’m the type of person who wants this.’ It’s something very different to say ‘I’m the type of person who is this.’”
A lot of people struggle with behavior change, goal setting and following through because they don't view themselves as the “type” of person that does X.
How to become that "type" of person:
First, you need to make a decision and an unwavering commitment to your goal.
Second, commit to the daily actions that support your goal.
Third, create a version of yourself in your mind based on this decision. What type of person are you? What are you most proud of from this new change?
Your new habit combined with your updated identity will help shift your personal narratives and beliefs to unlock your potential in both your personal and professional life.
Finally, allow momentum and making progress to be your motivation.
Then, we can get into the value of the habit loop. (shown below)
