May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

As expats, retirees, travelers, and even caregivers, we often focus on physical health — but mental health matters just as much.

Moving countries, navigating healthcare systems, language barriers, loneliness, stress, burnout, grief, anxiety, chronic illness, or simply being far from family can quietly take a toll on emotional well-being.

After 27 years as a nurse, I learned that mental health struggles don’t always “look” obvious. Sometimes it’s exhaustion. Irritability. Trouble sleeping. Loss of motivation. Feeling overwhelmed. Feeling disconnected.

Checking in on yourself is not weakness. Asking for support is not failure.

Simple things matter:
✨ Rest
✨ Connection
✨ Sunlight & movement
✨ Healthy nutrition
✨ Boundaries
✨ Talking to someone you trust
✨ Accessing professional help when needed

Living in Mexico should feel supported, not stressful — and part of my mission through Mexico Expat Health Concierge Services is helping expats feel less alone when navigating healthcare and wellness needs abroad.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Support exists, and you do not have to navigate it alone. 💚

New Health System Changes in Mexico – What Expats NEED to Know 🇲🇽

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about Mexico’s “new health insurance” or universal healthcare system… and honestly, there’s a lot of confusion out there.

So let’s break it down 👇

Mexico is rolling out a Universal Health Service starting in 2027. The goal is to integrate public systems like IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar into one connected network, so people can receive care across facilities—regardless of where they’re registered.

👉 Sounds amazing, right?

But here’s the reality—especially for expats:

✔️ This system is designed primarily for Mexican citizens and legal residents
✔️ You’ll need proper residency + registration (CURP + enrollment in the public system)
✔️ It will roll out in phases, starting with emergency care, major conditions, and continuity of treatment—not full unlimited access right away

⚠️ And most importantly…

“Universal” does NOT mean private healthcare.

It applies to the public system only—which still faces challenges like:
• Long wait times
• Limited specialists in some areas
• Overcrowding in certain facilities
• Resource and medication gaps

Even now, only a small percentage of Mexicans carry private health insurance, which is why many still rely on out-of-pocket care or private options for faster access.

💡 So what does this mean for expats?

If you’re living in Mexico full-time with residency:
➡️ You may benefit from expanded access within the public system

BUT…

If you’re:
• A part-time resident
• On a tourist visa
• Or someone who values fast, high-quality, private care

👉 This reform does NOT replace the need for private or international insurance

✨ Bottom line:
This is a positive step for Mexico—but it’s being misunderstood, especially in expat groups.

It’s about improving access within the public system, not eliminating the need for private coverage.

If you’re unsure what your best option is living here in Mexico, feel free to reach out.

As a nurse and expat myself, I help people navigate realistic, reliable healthcare options—not just what sounds good on paper.

🛑 What is Private 911?

Private 911 is a medical emergency response membership designed for expats and travelers in Mexico.

It fills the gap between:
• Calling 911 (which works very differently here), and
• Actually getting fast, appropriate medical care when minutes matter.

⚙️ How does it work?

✔️ You download the Private 911 app
✔️ In an emergency, you tap one button
✔️ Your GPS location is sent instantly
✔️ A bilingual medical response team takes over
✔️ They coordinate the right ambulance, notify hospitals, and stay involved throughout the emergency

This is not just an app — it’s real people advocating for you when you or a loved one cannot.

🏥 Why this matters in Mexico
• Ambulance services vary widely
• Hospitals often require payment or guarantees up front
• Language barriers can delay care
• Families are often left scrambling during emergencies

Private 911 helps remove confusion, delays, and panic when time is critical.

👥 Who should attend?

✔️ Travelers
✔️ Anyone who wants a plan in place before an emergency happens
