Your Nervous System Didn't Move!!
You did it. You sold off all your household goods, narrowed your life down to a few suitcases, and upheaved your life to a new country.
You believed this was what you needed. A slower pace, no crazy commutes, access to the beach every day, sunshine year round, and a chance to live life a little differently.
You have arrived in paradise, and yet, have you really?
Everything you wanted is here. The slower lifestyle, being closer to nature, walking everywhere, having more freedom and hopefully having a little more peace in your life. But you still hold tension in your jaw and shoulders, and you can't quite understand why.
You believed that moving would fix everything, and for a while, maybe it did. But then that tension slowly crept back in. Your nights became restless again, and the anxiety you thought you had left behind slowly started to seep back in.
Maybe it's not the environment that is the problem. Maybe it's that your nervous system never got the chance to regulate itself.
We can move to a completely different country and create an entirely different life, but our bodies don't necessarily know that everything has changed.
We can tell ourselves that we are safe, that we are in a new environment, that life is different now and that we are finally ready to slow down and heal. But the body can still be holding onto the patterns it learned from everything that came before.
It can still be bracing. It can still be protecting. It can still be preparing for something that isn't actually happening anymore.
You have a new environment, but your body is still running an old program.
And this is where I find the nervous system so fascinating.
Changing your environment can absolutely give you the space to live differently, but eventually you may have to work with the patterns your body has been carrying with you.
Maybe you changed your career. Maybe you changed your apartment, the people around you, your daily routine or what your mornings look like. You may have completely changed your life, and somewhere along the way you thought, “I'm finally going to slow down.”
Except your body didn't exactly follow the plan.
You still wake up switched on. Your shoulders creep upward when you're working. Your jaw gets tight without you noticing. You sit down to relax and somehow you're still mentally running through tomorrow's to do list.
This is something I see as a practitioner that I find genuinely interesting.
Changing your environment doesn't necessarily mean your body has changed its patterns.
Spinal Flow is a gentle, body based modality that works with these habitual patterns and allows us to become more aware of how the body is responding to stress, rather than simply telling ourselves that we should relax or trying to think our way out of it.
Maybe moving to Mexico was exactly what you needed.
Maybe the slower lifestyle, the sunshine, the ocean and the freedom really are giving you the environment you needed to live differently.
But sometimes the body needs to catch up with the life you've created.
If this sounds familiar and you're curious about what Spinal Flow could look like for you, I'm offering a free 20 minute consultation in Playa del Carmen.
There is no obligation and no hard sell. Just a conversation about what you're experiencing and an opportunity to see whether Spinal Flow makes sense for you.
If this hit a little too close to home, message me **“MOVE”** and I'll send you the details.
