Hey everybody, the moment has come to reveal … 🥁

The Weekly Row Recap for Week 17 (August 24-30):

This past week, I rowed far enough to have crossed the Strait of Gibraltar more than six times. That represents an almost 14-km (8.5-mile) increase over Week 16’s rowing distance: ⬆️ 18%.

💪 (cue Cake’s “The Distance” 🎶)

I also rowed on average right at the upper end of a California sea lion’s cruising range of 6-8 mph, and this afternoon, I would’ve beat one in an imaginary sea lion race across San Diego Bay to the Coronado Bridge. 🦭

So, yes, dear followers … even after traveling almost 5,000 miles back to France last night on about 2 hours of crying-baby-interrupted, upright-seated airplane sleep, I STILL knocked out my toughest row since I started tracking the difficulty index of my rows on July 1 and burned another 455 calories. Bring on the goat cheese and fig pizza tonight. I’ve earned it. 😅

Hey everybody, the moment has come to reveal … 🥁

The Week 16 (August 17-23) Row Recap:

Last week, I rowed far enough to have done a round-trip crossing of the Catalina Channel + more than 7 more miles! (The Catalina Crossing is a famous 20.2-mile swim between Catalina Island and Palos Verde in California.) That represents an almost 10-km increase over Week 15’s distance: ⬆️15%.

I also outpaced a typical manatee and on Sunday, I nearly doubled its average pace. Take that, sea cow! 😂

PS — If you’ve been following things, you’ll know that since Thursday, my Merach rowing app has had a timing/pacing bug that increased my pace by about 60%. As a stop-gap patch until Merach fixes things, Claude (family name, Anthropic) has created a glitch correction patch to account for the overestimation and bring my stats back to a normal level for my weekly reports.

I’m not quite sure what happened, but between yesterday and this morning, the Merach rowing app was updated and, as of today, I’m suddenly rowing 60% faster.

| Metric | 8/19 row | 8/20 row |
| Time | 59:26 | 37:04 |
| Avg Speed | 10.10 km/h | 16.20 km/h |
| Split | 2:58/500m | 1:51/500m |
| SPM | 33.67 | 33.60 |
| Avg HR | 133 bpm | 130 bpm |
| METs | 6.9 | 7.0 |
| Active Energy | 351 kcal | 222 kcal |

This is clearly a glitch in the app or the interface between the rower and the app, so I’ve flagged it for their tech team. Hopefully, I’ll get a response and a solution because, otherwise, their stats will be completely useless. 😒

As promised, dear fans (if I can call you that), here’s my first ever weekly report for Week 15 of rowing (August 10-16), finally replacing all those daily reports with something a little simpler.

Last week, it appears I rowed far enough to have done a round-trip crossing of the English Channel at the Strait of Dover if I’d actually been on the water, plus I found out that my average speed was faster than the top underwater swimming speed of a sea otter! 🦦 😂

Here you go …

13/08/2026

I’ve got the impression that I’m sharing too many updates now that I’m doing daily rowing so, starting today, there will be no more daily rowing reports. Instead, I plan to do weekly reports, perhaps on Mondays for the prior week. Stay tuned …

Rowing Day 80 (Week 15) …

Back to New York City for another one of my favorites: View of the East River. Because it is a relatively short row (by my current standards), I decided to increase the intensity by adjusting resistance at each kilometer mark, going from 10 to 11 to 12 to 13 to 12 to 11 to 10.

Rowing Day 79 (Week 15) …

Back to one of my mainstays: London. I’ve done this row eleven times now and I always like it. I guess I’m more of an Anglophile than I admit. But it is complicated. 😅

Rowing Day 78 (Start of Week 15) …

After a good night’s sleep to help get over my jet lag, I returned to “Teddy’s Rowing Studio West” this morning to kick and catch another good row, and since Merach has now dispensed with its 15-use maximum of 3D courses as of this month, I decided to do a 3D row along the Lake Michigan coast in Chicago. (It was my third time on this course.)

Rowing Day 77 (End of Week 14) …

After my mammoth travel day yesterday, I reached my final destination today and … … unpacked my second at-home rower to open up “Teddy’s Rowing Studio West.” Despite being beat and jet lagged, I had to get in a row today because I simply couldn’t skip two days in a row.

My pace was a bit more erratic than usual, which I’ll chalk up to being tired and using a new rower for the first time, but I did end up setting a new personal record for the best 500-m split time of 2:52.

Rowing Day 76 (Week 14) …

So, I’m leaving today for Paris to hop on a plane tomorrow to the US and since my train was so early, I had to get up at 4am so I could squeeze him a little rowing session. I felt a bit like a slacker for only doing 30 minutes, but … time constraints.

I won’t be able to row tomorrow because of my travel, but I plan to get in a nice row on Sunday evening to make up for my slacking. 😅
