Imagine the haze clearing outside, but your vision staying cloudy. 🌫️

That’s one way to imagine life with a cataract.

It often happens slowly. Colours become duller. Faces look less clear. Glare makes driving harder. Some people adjust their daily lives without realising how much their vision has changed.

Cataract surgery replaces the cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial lens. For many patients, clearer vision means being able to read, recognise loved ones and move around with greater confidence.

That’s the part of my work I cherish. Helping someone regain a little of their independence. 🤍

Imagine waking up every morning with vision similar to API 500 haze. 🌫️

Not just outside your window.
But everywhere you look.

Through the years, I’ve performed cataract surgery on patients who had that vision.

They had severely reduced vision before surgery.
Some could only count fingers held in front of their eyes.
Others could only detect when a hand was wave close to their face.

In medical terms, we call these Counting Fingers (CF) and Hand Movements (HM) vision.

But what does that actually mean?

With the haze situation in Malaysia lately, I thought of a simple way to help you imagine it.

We all know that as the Air Pollutant Index (API) rises, air quality gets worse. Heavy haze can also make distant objects harder to see.

Now, imagine that haze isn’t outside.
Imagine it’s coming from within your own natural lens inside your eyes.

That’s one way to understand how a dense cataract can affect someone’s vision.

A cataract occurs when the natural lens inside our eye becomes cloudy, preventing light from passing through clearly.

Over time, vision may become increasingly blurred, colours may appear duller, and glare can become more troublesome.

For someone with a very dense cataract, even recognising faces or finding their way around can become difficult.

Thankfully, cataracts can often be treated successfully with surgery.

And that’s why I love what I do.
Because sometimes, helping someone see clearly again means giving them back a part of their independence.
