SCOPE School is coming to Malaysia!

We are pleased to be hosting a SCOPE School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ, on Saturday 10 October. ๐Ÿ“ข

Obesity is a growing public health challenge in Malaysia. According to our Global Obesity Observatory, more than 1 in 4 adult women (27.5%) and nearly 1 in 5 adult men (19.3%) are living with obesity. ๐Ÿšจ

Obesity is a chronic disease and a major risk factor for many non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Healthcare professionals need the skills and confidence to deliver effective, evidence-based care.

Organised by Universiti Malaya, in collaboration with the Malaysian Obesity Society (MYOS) and the Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO), this one-day programme brings together leading local and international experts. Sessions cover pharmacotherapy, mental health, sleep disorders and weight stigma, alongside interactive workshops. ๐Ÿฉบ

Participants will also earn 4 points towards SCOPE Certification. ๐ŸŽ“

Obesity is a complex and chronic disease with significant genetic influence.

๐Ÿงฌ Roots of Obesity: Genetics

Obesity isn't caused by one thing - it's shaped by many interacting factors. Today we're looking at genetics. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ”ฌ Our genes account for somewhere between 40โ€“70% of a person's likelihood of developing obesity. Hundreds of genes play a role, and while no single one determines the outcome, their combined effect can significantly increase someone's biological susceptibility.

But genes alone don't determine the outcome. How they're expressed can be shaped by environment - from food systems to daily habits - which is exactly why we look at obesity as a product of biology and environment together.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Obesity Society (MYOS) held the first in our series of Obesity in Women Roadshows, themed โ€œA Life Course Approach to Precision Obesity Care.โ€

The roadshow builds on the Obesity in Women Clinical Practice Guidelines, launched in April 2026 in collaboration with the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia at the National Obesity Scientific Conference.

We were delighted to welcome close to 100 participants for an engaging day of learning and discussion. Obesity in women is shaped by unique biological, reproductive and social factors that evolve across the life course. Through this initiative, we hope to translate the guidelines into clinical practiceโ€”promoting obesity care that is more personalised, multidisciplinary and responsive to the needs of women at different stages of life.

A great start to the roadshow series, and we look forward to bringing these conversations to more healthcare professionals across Malaysia!

The inaugural Obesity Lived Experience Global Summit 2026, organised by the World Obesity Federation, was held on 14 July 2026 in Mexico City alongside the International Congress on Obesity (ICO 2026). The Summit brought together nearly 70 advocates from 16 countries, creating a global platform for people living with obesity to share their experiences, build advocacy skills, and help shape better obesity care and policy.

We are especially proud that ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Malaysia was represented by Dr Ruben Ramakrishnan, bringing a Malaysian voice and perspective to this important global conversation.

The Summit reinforces an increasingly important principle in obesity care: people with lived experience should not simply be recipients of care, but active partners in shaping the research, services and policies that affect them.

Bengkel ini dilaksanakan untuk meneliti sejauh mana aspek ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ diiktiraf dan diterapkan dalam penggubalan dasar berkaitan obesiti di Malaysia.

Dalam konteks ini, ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ menjadi sangat penting.

Kerana persoalan sebenar bukan hanya:

* Apa yang berkesan?โ€

Tetapi soalan yang lebih inklusif adalah;
โ€œUntuk siapa ia berkesan?โ€
"Siapa yang masih tertinggal?โ€
"Adakah jurang kesihatan semakin mengecil, atau semakin melebar?โ€
