Vitamins with Added Colorants – Experts Warn: May Cause Allergies and Harm Intelligence

Many people have the habit of taking vitamins daily, believing it helps supplement nutrition. However, experts warn that commercially available vitamin tablets often come in colorful sugar coatings. These may contain artificial colorants, glazing agents, and, to prevent tablets from sticking, lubricants and anti-caking agents. Consuming too many of these chemical additives could potentially trigger allergies and even impair intellectual development.

For the average person with a balanced diet, extra vitamin supplementation is unnecessary. Nutritionists also remind that if you do take them, choose low-dose, multi-nutrient formulas to avoid overdose, as excessive vitamin intake can cause toxicity.

Red, yellow, and brown — vitamin tablets often come in bright coatings, which may hide potential risks. Dr. Yen Tzung-Hai, Director of the Toxicology Department at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, said:

“The vitamins you buy at pharmacies are usually synthetic. Inside one tablet, there’s not only synthetic vitamins but also many chemical additives.”

Modern diets are often high in oil, salt, and refined foods, which can lead to nutritional imbalances. This is why many people rely on vitamins for health — but they may not realize these pills could hide dangers, as their bright colors often come from artificial dyes.

Dietitian Liu Yi-Li from Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital explained:

“For example, Yellow No. 4, Yellow No. 5, or Red No. 6, Red No. 40 — excessive intake may cause allergic reactions or hyperactivity in children.”

For instance, some B-complex vitamins appear brown on the outside but are light yellow inside. Some pink tablets have different interior colors — all due to added food-grade dyes. Others have smooth, glossy yellow coatings due to glazing agents.

Dr. Yen added:

“Some glazes are made from insect wax, petroleum wax, or synthetic petroleum wax. We worry that ingesting these may trigger allergic reactions.”

Dr. Yen further noted that only certain groups — such as dialysis patients, those with severe malnutrition, or those on tube feeding — might need vitamin supplementation.

“For the average person with a balanced diet, there’s no vitamin deficiency and no need for extra supplements.”

In other words, “one pill a day for health” is not necessarily correct. Dietitian Liu advised:
1. Avoid single high-dose vitamins — choose low-dose, multi-nutrient formulas.
2. Consider supplements only if fresh food intake is insufficient.

Dr. Yen also warned:

“You can’t take 10 or 20 vitamin pills in a day — that’s very dangerous. Overdosing on vitamins can cause poisoning.”

He clarified a common myth that “good vitamins dissolve in water”:

“This is not true. Vitamins are either water-soluble or fat-soluble — neither is better or worse. Excess water-soluble vitamins are excreted in urine, but fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in the body and cause toxicity.”

In short, the colorful coating meant to make vitamins look appealing could, in fact, turn them into a “poison pill.”

維他命摻色素 專家:恐過敏傷智力

很多人習慣天天吃維他命,認為這樣可以補充營養,不過專家提出警告,因為市售維他命錠,通常都有五顏六色的糖衣外觀,這很可能添加了人工色素、光澤劑之外,為了避免藥錠沾黏,還有潤滑劑和抗結塊劑,這些化學添加劑吃多恐怕引發過敏,甚至傷害智力發展。一般人均衡飲食下,根本不需要額外吃這些維他命,而且營養師也提醒,想吃也要選擇低劑量、複方的維他命,避免過量,因為維他命吃多了也會中毒。

紅色、黃色,還有咖啡色,維他命錠有五彩糖衣,這些吃多了小心有危機。林口長庚毒物科主任顏宗海:「外面藥房買到維他命,其實都是合成的維他命,像合成的維他命,它一顆的維他命錠裡面,它不只有合成的維他命,它一定添加了很多化學添加物。」

就是因為現代人飲食高油、高鹽又精緻化,反倒容易營養不均衡,所以依靠維他命想保持健康,萬萬想不到這一顆顆維他命有可能暗藏危機,因為鮮豔的外表其實就是添加人工色素。

台安醫院營養師劉怡里:「譬如說黃色4號、5號,或者紅色6號或40號,它們其實過量的話,可能還是會引起小朋友一些過敏反應或是躁動。」

像這顆維他命B群,外觀咖啡色,剝開一看,裏頭呈現淡黃色,還有粉紅色的這一顆,外表和內在也不同色調,都是因為加入食用級色素,另外這一顆有著光滑表面的黃色維他命,就是包覆著光澤劑。

顏宗海:「有些是蟲臘、有些是石油臘,或者是合成石油臘,像光澤劑其實我們也很擔心說,你把這些光澤吃進去,會誘發過敏反應。」

顏宗海:「洗腎病人,或者說嚴重營養不良,或者你是前靜脈的管灌飲食的話,那可能就需要補充維他命,一般人只要均衡飲食,我想正常吃的話,是不缺乏維他命,也不需要補充。」

換句話說,天天一粒保健康,可不是正確觀念。劉怡里:「不要吃單一高劑量的,盡量選擇低劑量複方的維他命,第2個就是當你的新鮮食物吃的不足的時候,我們再考慮保健食品的補充,那第3個就是說,我們的保健食品一天裡面不要補充太多,比如說可能選擇1到2種的種類就好了。」

顏宗海:「你也不能說,我今天吞了10幾、20顆維他命,哇!這樣非常危險的,維他命吃過量會中毒喔。」
尤其坊間流傳好的維他命會溶於水,顏宗海澄清,這根本不可信,因為維他命分為水溶性和脂溶性,一個溶於水、一個溶於油,沒有好壞之分,不過過量的水溶性維他命,會隨著尿液被排出身體之外,就怕脂溶性維他命吃多了,存在體內會中毒,糖衣反而變毒藥。
