The Two Main Enemies of Your Eyes: Blue Light and UV Rays
Everyone should start consciously protecting their eyes.
Why? Because nowadays, our eyes are constantly being harmed.
What’s harming them?
Blue light and ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Today, pharmacist Darren will answer the following questions:
What are blue light and UV rays?
How do excessive blue light and UV rays damage the eyes?
How can we reduce the harm caused by these types of light?
👉🏼 What are blue light and UV rays?
Blue light is a type of visible light with a relatively short wavelength.
It doesn’t only exist in blue-colored light—
Common sources like incandescent bulbs, smartphones, and fluorescent lights also emit blue light.
So in daily life, we are all heavily exposed to blue light.
UV rays, on the other hand, are invisible to the naked eye.
Their primary source is sunlight.
That’s why too much exposure to sunlight is harmful to the eyes.
Both of these types of light carry high energy,
which means they can damage the eyes.
👉🏼 How do blue light and UV rays damage the eyes?
Excessive blue light can cause eye inflammation, oxidation, and cellular damage.
Prolonged exposure can lead to computer vision syndrome, causing eye fatigue, dryness, and blurry vision.
The lens of the eye filters both blue light and UV rays. Over time, this constant filtering causes the lens to become cloudy, leading to cataracts.
If the retina is exposed to UV and blue light over the long term, it may develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Although both types of light can harm the eyes,
floaters are not caused by blue light.
Floaters are commonly due to aging-related changes in the vitreous of the eye, where the gel-like substance begins to liquefy.
As clumps and strands form in the vitreous, they cast shadows on the retina, appearing as floaters in your vision.
👉🏼 How can you reduce eye damage from these lights?
-Wear blue light-blocking glasses or photochromic lenses.
-Wear sunglasses outdoors to reduce UV exposure.
-Use warm-colored lights (yellow, orange) instead of cool-colored bulbs.
Supplement with lutein and zeaxanthin.
🔴 Two Key Benefits of Lutein & Zeaxanthin:
-They are antioxidants that protect the macula from oxidative damage and slow AMD progression.
-They help form macular pigment, which filters harmful blue light.
-If you’re thinking about starting eye health supplements, you can consider the following:
