Today, I made a patient cry.
She told me: “It’s hard. I wish I could be like my friends who aren’t so easily affected by these things.”
I told her: “(Name), I just want you to know that you’re doing a great job. Everyone has different thresholds for stress, so you don’t have to force yourself to be like everyone else. The more you try to be someone you’re not, the more stressed you’ll become; it turns into a self-perpetuating cycle. Just because you’re going through something difficult doesn’t mean you are difficult or weak. Imagine you’re the blue sky. Grey clouds may come and go, but they never change the fact that the sky is blue. Things may feel bleak now, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.”
At the end of that, I saw tears welling up in her eyes. It felt like no one had ever said those words to her before.
And in that moment, I was reminded that sometimes healing doesn’t come from advice, diagnoses, or solutions… but from being seen, validated, and told that you are not broken for feeling the way you do.
Words matter.Being human matters.
And sometimes, that’s enough to make a difference. 💜
