Buy2thrive

Buy2thrive BUY2THRIVE is a nutrition education program for parents of young children that will be first launched in Mozambique.

BUY2THRIVE is a nutrition education program that will not only teach parents of young children about healthy foods, but also how to make good food purchases in local markets. The motivation behind the project is to empower parents with the knowledge they need to make healthy food choices for themselves and their children. Improving nutrition, especially of women and children, has been found to hav

e profound impacts on reducing hunger and poverty in developing countries like Mozambique. The program will first and foremost teach parents about good nutrition for themselves and their children. It will also teach them how to recognize if their child isn't getting the right amount of a nutrient. Finally, parents will learn how to create food budgets and how to make changes in their purchases as their income and food availability changes. Even the poor purchase a portion, if not all, of the foods they need. So, improving nutrition needs to teach parents more than just what types of foods are good to eat.

Yesterday was our last day in the communities and it was bittersweet. But this picture shows how education is contagious. When families agreed to participate they only had to have one household member come to each of the weekly sessions. We held group sessions of two households, but as you can see that there are a few more than just two people here 😍😍 We’ve had families where both the mom and the dad committed to coming weekly, families that told us they wished the program was longer, moms who told us they’d miss their weekly time with the students, people insisting that we remember them the next time we do a nutrition program because they want to learn more. I am completely overwhelmed and wishing that we had millions of $$ to reach as many households as possible. But today we start small. And tomorrow we grow ♥️

"One of the hardest things we are trying to prove, we are trying to solve complex problems such as health and malnutrition, and to find people that share the same purpose as us" - Crima's AgroForest's Abdul Raufo de Almeida and we couldn't agree more.

This really is a top notch team of enumerator's right here. B2T was lucky to find them! Today's pre-test of the survey went well! Now... on to phase two...🥳

This right here is a top notch research team. Without them, you’d find me aimlessly wandering the streets of Nampula, using Google Translate to try to speak Portuguese. Find people who share your passion and do a crazy project with them - 10/10 would recommend to a friend. @ Nampula

Some fun facts about Nampula: The city of Nampula is located in the Nampula province in Northern Mozambique. It has a population of just over 700,000 and is a hub for business in the north. The city is diverse, with the native Makhuwa comprising the majority of the population but also has a visible Portuguese, Indian, Chinese and Lebanese population. Its the winter right now in Nampula, which means its a delightful 24 degrees Celsius on average and its heading into the dry season here (the driest months being August and September). B2T will be working with the local university, UniLurio, to start implementation in the next couple weeks! We hope you'll follow along here and on our blog at www.buy2thrive.com!
