DRUG OF THE WEEK: PREDNISOLONE
This week, we spotlight Prednisolone because of its widespread use and, more importantly, its frequent misuse in the community. While it is a very effective medicine, it is often taken without proper medical guidance, leading to avoidable complications.
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system in conditions such as asthma, severe allergies, skin disorders, autoimmune diseases, and certain inflammatory conditions. When correctly prescribed and monitored, it can be life-changing.
However, misuse—such as taking it without prescription, incorrect dosing, or prolonged unsupervised use—can result in serious side effects including increased blood sugar, weight gain, weakened immunity, stomach irritation, mood changes, and hormonal imbalance.
Key Message: Prednisolone is not a drug for self-medication. It should only be used under the strict guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
Stay informed. Stay safe. Use medicines responsibly.
