CEREBRAL PALSY

Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive neurological disorder caused by damage or abnormal development of the brain before, during, or shortly after birth. It primarily affects movement, muscle tone, posture, and motor coordination, and may also involve sensory, cognitive, and communicative impairments.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy results from damage to the developing brain. The causes can be classified into:

1. Prenatal (before birth) – Most common

- Brain malformations

- Infections during pregnancy (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus)

- Placental insufficiency

- Exposure to toxins or drugs

2. Perinatal (around the time of birth)

- Birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen during delivery)

- Complicated labor and delivery

- Premature birth and low birth weight

3. Postnatal (after birth)

- Brain infections (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis)

- Head injuries (e.g., from falls or abuse)

- Stroke in infancy
