🩡 SAME DIAGNOSIS DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN THE SAME BRACE

Here's an important thing to understand about orthotic care:

Two people can have the same diagnosis but still need completely different orthotic devices.

For example, imagine two people who have both had a stroke.

πŸ‘€ Person A

They have foot drop, but their knee is reasonably stable during walking.

After assessment, the main problem is ankle control and foot clearance.

An AFO may be appropriate because the ankle is the main area requiring support.

πŸ‘€ Person B

They also had a stroke, but they have significant leg weakness and their knee becomes unstable when they stand or walk.

An AFO may not provide enough control.

A KAFO may be considered because additional support is required at the knee as well as the ankle and foot.

Same diagnosis. Different presentation. Different needs. Different orthotic solution.

This is why proper assessment matters.

We look at things like:

🦡 Muscle strength
πŸ“ Range of motion
🚢 Walking pattern
βš™οΈ Alignment
πŸ›‘οΈ Stability
🎯 Functional goals

Diagnosis tells us the condition. Assessment tells us what the person needs.

🩡 HOW DOES A KAFO HELP DURING WALKING?

A KAFO (Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis) can provide support and control across the knee, ankle and foot.

During walking, it may help with:

🦡 Knee stability
πŸ“ Lower-limb alignment
🚢 Gait control
πŸ›‘οΈ Additional support and protection

For someone with significant weakness or instability, this additional control may help make standing and walking more stable and functional.

However, a KAFO isn't the same for everyone.

Its design and level of control should be based on the individual's assessment, walking pattern, physical abilities and functional goals.

The goal isn't simply to restrict movement.

The goal is to provide the right amount of support and control for the person's needs.

🦡 WHY DO SOME PEOPLE NEED A KAFO?

Have you ever seen someone wearing a long leg brace extending from the thigh down to the foot?

That may be a KAFO.

KAFO means Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis.

It is an orthotic device designed to support and/or control the:

🦡 Knee
🦢 Ankle
πŸ‘£ Foot

A KAFO may be considered when someone has:

βœ… Knee instability
βœ… Significant muscle weakness
βœ… Difficulty controlling the leg during walking
βœ… Certain alignment problems
βœ… A need for additional joint stability or protection

However, having a particular diagnosis does not automatically mean someone needs a KAFO.

Proper assessment is important.

Muscle strength, range of motion, alignment, stability, walking pattern and the person's functional goals all help determine whether a KAFO is appropriate.

The goal isn't simply to provide a long brace.

The goal is to provide the right support to help the person stand, walk and function as safely and effectively as possible.

🦡 WHAT DOES AN ORTHOSIS ACTUALLY DO?

An orthosis is more than just a brace.

It is a device designed to help support, protect, align, or improve the function of a body part.

Depending on the person's needs, an orthosis may help to:

βœ… Support weak or unstable joints
βœ… Control unwanted movement
βœ… Improve limb or joint alignment
βœ… Protect vulnerable areas
βœ… Assist walking and movement
βœ… Improve overall function

For example, an AFO (Ankle-Foot Orthosis) can help control the position of the ankle and foot during standing and walking in appropriate cases.

But not everyone with the same diagnosis needs the same type of orthosis.

Why?

Because every person is different.

Muscle strength, range of motion, alignment, balance, walking pattern and daily activities can all influence the appropriate orthotic solution.

The goal isn't simply to provide a brace.

It's to provide the right support for the individual's needs and goals. 🩡

🩡 PROSTHESIS vs ORTHOSIS β€” WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a prosthesis and an orthosis?

Here's a simple explanation:

🦿 PROSTHESIS

A prosthesis replaces a body part that is missing.

For example, someone who has lost a leg through amputation may use a prosthetic leg.

🦡 ORTHOSIS

An orthosis supports, protects, aligns, or improves the function of a body part that is still present.

Examples include AFOs, KAFOs, spinal braces and other supportive devices.

So remember:

πŸ‘‰πŸ½ PROSTHESIS = replaces what is missing.

πŸ‘‰πŸ½ ORTHOSIS = supports what is present.

Both are important in rehabilitation, but the appropriate device depends on the individual's needs and proper assessment.

🦿 BEHIND THE DEVICE

Have you ever wondered what happens before a prosthetic device reaches the patient?

It's much more than simply making a limb.

The process can involve:

πŸ”Ή Assessment
πŸ”Ή Casting
πŸ”Ή Cast/model modification
πŸ”Ή Socket fabrication
πŸ”Ή Component selection
πŸ”Ή Alignment
πŸ”Ή Fitting and adjustments
πŸ”Ή Gait training

Each step contributes to how comfortable, stable and functional the final prosthesis will be.

Today, we're giving you a small glimpse into some of the technical work that happens behind the scenes.

Because when it comes to prosthetic care, precision matters.

🩡 How Does Assessment Help Us Choose The Right Orthosis?

Getting an orthosis is not just about knowing someone's diagnosis.

The important question is:

"What does this individual actually need?"

Before providing an orthosis, we consider:

βœ… Muscle strength
βœ… Joint movement
βœ… Body alignment
βœ… Walking pattern
βœ… Balance and stability
βœ… Daily activities and goals

Why?

Because every person is different.

Someone with the same condition as another person may need a completely different approach.

A good orthosis is not just a brace.

It is a carefully planned solution designed to help someone move better, function better, and live more independently.

🩡 The right orthosis begins with the right assessment.

🩡 MOBILITY MATTERS | Assessment Wednesday

What do we assess before providing an orthosis?

Getting the right orthosis isn't just about knowing someone's diagnosis.

We also need to understand how that condition affects the individual.

During an assessment, we may look at:

🦡 Muscle strength
↔️ Joint movement
πŸ“ Alignment and posture
🚢 Walking pattern
βš–οΈ Balance and stability
🎯 Daily activities and functional goals

Why?

Because every person is different.

Two people may have the same diagnosis but require completely different orthotic solutions.

That's why proper assessment matters.

The diagnosis tells us the condition.
The assessment helps us understand the person.

🩡 MOBILITY MATTERS

Why is proper assessment important before getting an orthosis?

A brace may look suitable, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right solution for everyone.

Before an orthosis is recommended, several things may need to be assessed:

βœ” Muscle strength
βœ” Joint movement
βœ” Alignment
βœ” Walking pattern
βœ” Balance
βœ” Functional needs
βœ” Daily activities

This is important because two people with the same condition may have very different needs.

The goal isn't simply to give someone a brace.

It's to understand the person and provide an orthotic solution that supports their specific needs and goals.

The right orthosis starts with the right assessment.

🩡 MOBILITY MATTERS

Why does proper assessment matter before getting an orthosis?

An orthosis is not simply a brace that can be chosen based on a diagnosis.

Before recommending one, a Prosthetist & Orthotist considers things like:

βœ… Muscle strength
βœ… Range of motion
βœ… Alignment
βœ… Walking pattern
βœ… Balance
βœ… Functional needs
βœ… Daily activities and goals

Why?

Because two people with the same condition may have very different needs.

A good orthotic solution should be based on the individualβ€”not just the diagnosis.

A diagnosis tells us what condition a person has.
An assessment tells us what that person needs.
