On the 28th of july, 2025, the *Standing Committee on Public Health* in collaboration with *EO-Health UBEMSA*, organized a public health initiative in commemoration of world hepatitis day.

This initiative comprised of free blood pressure screening, blood glucose checks, BMI assessments and, of course, Hepatitis B testing as well as counselling.
Over a *100* individuals today, majority of which did not know about the virus, went home *AWARE* of their hepatitis B status. We consider this a WIN and a small step in bridging the gap between public health, community medicine and the people.

A heartfelt thankyou goes to the sponsors of this event, the Local organizing officer and, most importantly, the *volunteers* who took out time to be part of this initiative.

This is what impact looks like.
We may not be able to reach everyone in one day, but we’re proud to have started with someone. We’ll keep pushing - one person, one community, one step at a time.

*Because, indeed, not all heroes wear capes. Some wear SCOPH shirts. Some are SCOPHeroes*. 💚

Each year on May 17th, World Hypertension Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of heart health and the silent risks posed by high blood pressure.

This condition, known as a "silent killer," often goes undetected but can lead to severe complications like heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease if left unmanaged.

This year's message emphasizes the need for regular monitoring and adopting a proactive lifestyle to prevent and manage hypertension.

In commemoration of World Malaria Day (Friday, April 25th), The Standing Committee on Public Health, University of Benin Medical Student's Association (SCOPH-UBEMSA), in collaboration with several other committees and NGOs, as well as the Edo State Ministry of Health, organized three programs

📌 An online awareness infographics shared on the 24th of April to sensitize the public about the dangers and ways of preventing malaria.

📌 A rally/road show held on the 25th of April for further public awareness and sensitization.

📌 And, a medical outreach also held on the 25th of April, where we checked the malaria status of numerous individuals, as well as checking other basic vital signs such as the blood sugar, blood pressure and the body mass index.
Malaria drugs and other vitamins were as well distributed.

Overall, it was a very fun and educational experience. Working and building strong relationships with other committees, while fulfilling our duties as advocates of public health.

_Indeed, not all heroes wear capes, some of them are *SCOPHeroes*_. 💙❤

Today, I, alongside the Secretary-General and the South-South Regional Assistant, had the honor of representing *SCOPH-UBEMSA* (Standing Committee on Public Health, University of Benin Medical Students’ Association) during a meeting with the Edo State Ministry of Health.

Alongside several other organizations and committees — COMOPH, FAMSA SCOHE, Red Cross, WHO, JINTOK, etc. — we engaged in insightful discussions as regards the preparation for *World Malaria Day 2025* 🦟🌍.

SCOPH-UBEMSA remains committed to being a strong voice for public health advocacy and action 📢🩺.
Stay tuned in as we roll out activities leading to April 25th — World Malaria Day ✨.
