Beyond the Parasite: The Silent Reproductive Health Crisis of Schistosomiasis

Schistosomiasis remains one of the most neglected tropical diseases affecting millions of people worldwide. While it is widely recognized for its parasitic effects, far less attention is given to its serious reproductive health consequences.

Women and girls in endemic regions often experience complications such as infertility, chronic pain, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and increased susceptibility to other infections due to prolonged exposure to the disease.

Addressing this hidden burden is essential for improving community health outcomes and advancing global efforts toward the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

This event will convene public health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and advocates to discuss the intersection between schistosomiasis and reproductive health and to identify actionable strategies for prevention, awareness, and control

We invite you to be part of this important conversation.

Strengthening Health Systems for Sustainable NTD Elimination

Eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) is not a one-time effort it requires resilient and responsive health systems.

Sustainable progress depends on:

• Strong primary healthcare services
• Trained and supported community health workers
• Reliable disease surveillance systems
• Access to essential medicines
• Community ownership and participation
When health systems are strengthened, NTD programs become more effective, integrated, and sustainable.

Ending NTDs is not just about treatment it’s about building systems that protect communities today and for generations to come.

Reaching the Last Mile

Neglected Tropical Diseases persist where access to healthcare is limited to remote villages, underserved communities, and vulnerable populations.

To truly end NTDs, we must prioritize the last mile:

Delivering medicines to hard-to-reach areas

Strengthening community-based health systems

Training local volunteers and health workers

Ensuring no one is left behind

Equity must remain at the centre of elimination efforts.

When we reach the last mile, we move closer to lasting impact.

The Power of Partnership

Ending Neglected Tropical Diseases is not the responsibility of one organization alone.

Progress happens when governments, health workers, community leaders, donors, and partners work together toward a shared goal: protecting vulnerable populations.

Through collaboration, we can:

Expand access to preventive treatment

Strengthen health systems

Improve surveillance and monitoring

Sustain long-term impact

Partnership is not optional it is essential to achieving elimination targets.

Together, we can accelerate progress toward a world free of NTDs.

Treatment Works

Neglected Tropical Diseases are preventable and treatable.

Safe, effective medicines often delivered through mass drug administration (MDA) have protected millions of people and reduced disease burden across endemic communities.

When treatment reaches those who need it most, it:

Improves health and nutrition

Boosts school attendance and productivity

Breaks the cycle of poverty and disease

Ending NTDs is achievable with sustained treatment, strong systems, and community engagement.
