Svspected kidna99ers who abdvcted a medical doctor in Edo state and klllld his younger brother arr3sted after taking their sick child to the doctor's hospital

Suspected kidna99ers who abdvcted a medical doctor and his brother kllllg the younger sibling found themselves in police custody after seeking medical help from the very doctor they had terr07ized.

The incident began on January 2, 2026, when Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde (also referred to as Dr. Abu Tunde or Dr. Abu Babatunde), a house officer at Edo University Teaching Hospital in Auchi, was ambvshed alongside his younger brother, Abu Tahir Babatunde, near their residence on City Pride Road in the Igbira Camp area of Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. Armed gvnmen intercepted them, leading to their abdvction.

The kidna99ers initially demanded a staggering ransom of N200 million for the brothers' release. Despite negotiations, the situation turned tr4gic: the younger brother, Abu Tahir, was klllld in captivity, with his body later discovered near the Orley River along City Pride Road on January 5, 2026.

The abdvctors continued holding Dr. Babatunde, eventually reducing their demand. After the family supported by friends, well-wishers, organizations, and public contributions paid a reported N50 million ransom (in tranches of N20 million and N30 million), the doctor was released around January 14, 2026. He was in stable condition but required medical treatment for injvries, including a bvll3t graze, and was later discharged from the hospital.

Then came the remarkable turn of events. On the morning of February 8, 2026, two svspected kidna993rs linked to the abdvction reportedly brought their sick child to the same hospital where Dr. Babatunde works, Edo University Teaching Hospital, Iyamho (or a related facility in the Auchi area).

The doctor, who was at the hospital himself (receiving w0vnd dressing care following his ordeal), immediately recognized them.

Without hesitation, Dr. Babatunde alerted hos

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) recently removed the “3-attempts” window rule for qualifying exams. Until now, candidates had just three chances to pass, but with this policy, there’s no limit anymore.

For some, this change is a relief. It reduces exam pressure, gives room for those with personal or financial setbacks, and aligns with global practices where multiple attempts are allowed. It also ensures no aspiring nurse is permanently locked out because of limited trials.

But others are worried. Without limits, students may lose seriousness, and the discipline nursing requires could be weakened. Standards might be questioned if passing becomes a matter of repeated tries rather than strong preparation. It may also overstretch exam resources and shift focus from competence to persistence.

At its core, the policy raises one big question: is this a step toward fairness and inclusivity, or could it water down seriousness and professional standards in nursing
