You were standing, walking, or even sitting normally…

Then suddenly, everything went blank.

You woke up a few moments later and felt like nothing happened.

Fainting may be caused by something simple, but unexplained fainting should not be ignored.

Fainting happens when there is a temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain, causing a brief loss of consciousness.

Have you ever been sitting or lying down, stood up quickly, and suddenly felt dizzy or like you might faint?

You may have experienced orthostatic hypotension.

Orthostatic hypotension is when your blood pressure drops significantly after standing up, causing symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness.

What Happens When You Stand Up?

When you stand, gravity pulls some blood toward your legs.

Normally, your body quickly adjusts your blood pressure to keep enough blood flowing to your brain.

But if this adjustment doesn't happen properly, your blood pressure can fall and you may feel dizzy or even faint.

Common Symptoms

You may experience:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Blurred or tunnel vision
• Weakness
• Feeling unsteady
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Fainting

Symptoms usually happen within a few minutes of standing and often improve when you sit or lie down.

Who Is More At Risk?

1. Older adults

The body's blood pressure control system can become less responsive with age.

2. People who are dehydrated

Vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, fever, or simply not drinking enough fluids can lower blood volume.

3. People taking certain medications

Some blood pressure medicines, diuretics, and other drugs can make blood pressure drop when standing.

4. People with diabetes

Long-term diabetes can damage nerves that help control blood pressure.

5. People with certain heart conditions

Some heart problems can make it harder for the body to maintain blood pressure when standing.

6. People with nervous system disorders

Conditions affecting the autonomic nervous system can interfere with blood pressure regulation.

7. People who have been resting in bed for a long time

Prolonged bed rest can make it harder for the body to adjust to standing.

8. People with significant blood loss or anemia

Reduced blood volume or low oxygen-carrying capacity can contribute to dizziness and fainting.

What Can Help?

• Stand up slowly, especially after lying down.
• Stay adequately hydrated unless your doctor has told you to restrict fluids.
• Avoid standing still for long periods if it triggers symptoms.
• Sit or lie down immediately if you feel faint.
• Review your medications with a healthcare professional if symptoms started after taking a new medicine.

🚨 When Should You Get Checked?

If you frequently feel dizzy or faint after standing, don't simply assume it is normal.

Get medically assessed, especially if you actually faint or have chest pain, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, or neurological symptoms.

Feeling dizzy once after standing up quickly can happen to anyone.

But repeated dizziness or fainting after standing deserves medical attention.

You may think your legs are simply tired because you walk a lot.

But if your legs repeatedly hurt when you walk and the pain goes away when you rest, your blood vessels may be telling you something.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when the arteries supplying blood to the legs and feet become narrowed or blocked.

Imagine walking for a few minutes and suddenly feeling pain, aching, or tightness in your calf.

You stop and rest.

A few minutes later, the pain disappears.

Then you start walking again—and it comes back.

That pattern should not always be ignored.

One possible cause is peripheral artery disease (PAD).

PAD happens when the arteries supplying blood to the legs become narrowed, often because of a buildup of fatty deposits.

When you walk, your leg muscles need more blood and oxygen.

If the arteries are narrowed, they may not be able to supply enough blood, causing pain.

You feel unusually tired.

You assume you just need more sleep.

But then you notice that climbing stairs, walking, or doing your normal activities leaves you much more exhausted than usual.

Sometimes, unusual tiredness can be a sign that the heart is inflamed.

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle, and it can affect how well the heart pumps blood and maintains its normal rhythm.
