Dwarf Ojukwu oil palm variety (Virescens) is a hybrid, high yield and early fruiting oil palm variety. This particular from the picture attached started fruiting in our garden even before two years.
Yes, not many people know that there are three major types of oil palm fruit based on their colour and level of ripeness. These are:
1. Virescens:The fruits are green in colour when unripe due to a marked absence of anthocyanin pigment. They become light
reddish-orange when ripe with a greenish tip. Some of us grew up seeing this variety of oil palm standing very tall inside bush
2. Nigrescens: these fruits are black in colour when unripe, the fruits become red when ripe with part of the top half black. This is the type you see everyday and everywhere
3. Albescens: Albescens These fruits are white when unripe due to a marked
absence of carotenoids. They are pale yellow
when ripe. I guess you have never seen that type before?đŸ˜„
