ENSPHCDA & Partners Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2026 🤱

The Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, in partnership with UNICEF, joins the global community to mark World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7 2026.

Theme: Breastfeeding for a sustainable state in life: Strengthen what works.

Why it matters:
Only 29% of babies in Nigeria are exclusively breastfed - NDHS 2024.
Many children still face risks of malnutrition, infections, and poor growth.

The facts:
• Breastmilk alone provides 100% of nutrients + water for the first 6 months
• Exclusive breastfeeding = healthy growth, strong immunity, better brain development
• Good nutrition starts in pregnancy and continues through childhood

For infants, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods, protects against malnutrition, infectious disease, obesity, and chronic conditions later in life.

A small act today = a lifetime of impact for our children and Enugu State.

The Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency proudly celebrates the outstanding participation of our Executive Secretary, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, at the 20th Annual Scientific Conference and All Fellows’ Congress (ASCAF 2026) of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, held in Enugu on 5th August 2026.

As a Panel Discussant, Dr. Ani-Osheku spoke on Public–Private Partnerships in the health sector, emphasizing that effective partnerships should strengthen health systems while maintaining public ownership and accountability. She highlighted the importance of service contracts, management contracts, and build–operate–transfer models in improving access, quality, and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

She also underscored the critical role of health data infrastructure, evidence-based planning, and facility readiness in achieving universal health coverage. Addressing the NHIA Act 2022 and the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), she stressed that mandatory health insurance, increased healthcare financing, and functional health facilities must work together to ensure that coverage translates into real access to quality healthcare, especially for vulnerable populations.

In recognition of her distinguished contribution to national health discourse, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku was presented with the Plaque of Honour & Appreciation by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria for her outstanding service as a Panel Discussant at ASCAF 2026.

We congratulate our Executive Secretary on this well-deserved honour and celebrate her continued leadership in advancing inclusive, evidence-driven, and people-centred primary healthcare in Enugu State and Nigeria at large.
