17TH FEBRUARY, 2026.
FIRST EVER WORLD CLASS ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERIES PERFORMED IN EPE.
Successful Total Hip Replacement and Giant Cell Tumour surgery.
A new chapter has been opened in the medical history of Epe as the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, Lagos State, successfully performed two landmark world-class Orthopaedic surgeries, procedures never before carried out in the town.
FMCEPE eports that the breakthrough operations, conducted on Monday, February 16, 2026, represent a significant leap in specialized healthcare delivery within the region and affirm the centre’s growing capacity to handle complex medical cases that previously required referral outside Epe.
Speaking during a press briefing, the Medical Director of FMC Epe, Dr. Adeleke Adesola KAKA, described the achievement as historic and transformative for the community.
“This is the first time world-class Orthopaedic surgeries of this magnitude are being carried out in this Medical Centre and in Epe in particular. Before our take-off as FMC, such highly specialized Orthopaedic services were not available here,” he said.
Dr. KAKA explained that while orthopaedic surgeries had been performed in the hospital previously, including during its days as a General Hospital, the newly executed procedures are of a far more advanced and specialized category.
“We have been performing Orthopaedic surgeries in this hospital before now and even during the General Hospital era, but not this type.
These are world-class procedures that are not available everywhere and had not been done in Epe before,” he emphasized.
The first surgery involved a 22-year-old female patient diagnosed with Right Radius Giant Cell Tumour. The second was carried out on a 35-year-old male patient who suffered from Avascular Necrosis of the Femur (Ficat and Arlet Stage IV), which required a Left Primary Total Hip Replacement.
The procedure involved replacing the damaged hip joint with an artificial implant to restore mobility and relieve chronic pain.
According to the Medical Director, both surgeries were successful and the patients are recovering well.
“The hip was perfectly replaced and the patient is happy to access this healthcare right here in Epe. This demonstrates that our people can now receive this level of specialized care without leaving their community,” he stated.
Dr. Kaka further noted that affordability remains a guiding principle of the centre.
“The cost of these surgeries here is highly affordable. In fact, it is about one-third of what patients would pay in many other places.
We are committed to making advanced healthcare accessible without placing unbearable financial burden on our people,” he explained.
He added that the standard of affordability was inspired by the vision of Tunji Alausa, former Minister of Health and an indigene of Epe.
“Dr. Tunji Alausa had always maintained that all services at FMC Epe should be affordable to residents in Epe and its axis. That has been the standard we have continued to uphold,” Dr. Kaka noted.
However, he acknowledged that even with subsidized rates, some patients may still struggle to afford specialized procedures.
He therefore called on Non-Governmental Organizations and well-meaning individuals to partner with the hospital.
“We are appealing to Non-Governmental Organizations and philanthropic bodies to come in and support patients who may still find it difficult to pay, despite the affordability.
Healthcare is a collective responsibility, and together we can ensure no one is denied quality treatment because of financial constraints,” he urged.
The orthopaedic team was led by Professor Adegbehingbe Olayinka Adediran, alongside Dr. Oladosu Musiliu Atanda, Dr. Agbomabiwon Nurudeen, and Dr. Alaba Idowu Oluwagbenga, with support from theatre staff including Matron Ojelabi Adetutu Oluwaseyi and anesthetist Mrs. Odekunle Olanike.
Professor Adegbehingbe reassured residents of the hospital’s readiness.
“I want to assure the general public that FMC Epe has experienced and competent surgeons with the required equipment to carry out advanced Orthopaedic procedures.
There is no need to travel outside when the same standard of care is available here in Epe at an affordable rate,” he stressed.
Dr. Kaka also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu for their continued support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, and the Permanent Secretaries of Health, for their invaluable support in ensuring the smooth take-off and continued efficient operation of FMC Epe, noting that their guidance and oversight have been instrumental in establishing the hospital as a center of excellence for specialized and accessible healthcare services in the region.
With this milestone, FMC Epe continues to position itself as a rising referral hub for advanced Orthopaedic care, delivering world-class surgical solutions at accessible rates while calling for collaborative support to ensure inclusivity in healthcare delivery.
